Wasn't there also a problem with the Crown Vic patrol cars catching fire when hit in the rear ? Those old Grand Furys were tanks. My cousin & his partner were T boned in one while on patrol in Brooklyn. They got banged up pretty bad but both survived the accident.

Ford cleverly placed the gas tank well BEHIND the rear axle.... It's a gas bomb because there is ZERO protection for the gas tank. I believe Ford has had some major lawsuits about this issue. Every time I drove a Crown Vic cruiser I wondered about getting rear ended!

There was, however Ford has "proven" that the problem was equipment mounted in the trunk that actually pierced the tanks and set the car on fire. I know that starting with (I believe) the 05 model year, the CVPI has been crash tested from behind at 75 mph with no fire. No other car has been crash tested to that standard. Also, Ford now offers a fire suppression system on the new CVPI's (again, I think that started in 05).
Are Impalla SS 94 - 96 with LT-1 Corvette motor comfortable cars to drive with a suspension that isn't a buck board ride?
Love the luxury ride of the now discontinued Buick Ultra Park Avenue.
The early and mid nineties Caprices we had were pretty comfortable and rode decent. We went to primarily Crown Vics in 97, and then to Primarily Impalas in 2000 which were supplemented by Crown Vics.
All rode OK, but I always thought the Crown Vic's handled like crap. Nice car for nailing it on a straight Highway, but a horror when ripping around City Streets.

This is the reason why perps will take you to the closest exit from highway and try to loose you in the city.
