Default Tunning

So i kinda understand that tunning makes the car faster but i dont exactly understand how or what is done? Could someone explaine to me. And also is it worth tunning my vette. I have B&B bullets and a vararam intake. Im on long island so where would be the place to get it tuned if was going to do it? And how much is it normally cost?
Thanks

I'm no expert at this, but this might give you a starting point.

First off, there are a ton of things that the engine management computer takes care of. When you have the car "tuned" what you are doing, for the most part, is changing some of the parameters in the software of the engine computer to new values - more timing, different A/F ratios, when the engine fan comes on and for how long, what check engine codes will actually dispaly and I am sure that there are a lot more.

It takes some specialized equipment to do this and, I maintain it takes some real skill to do it right also. There are places where you can mail in your computer and they will flash it with new "improved" parameters. Some folks think this works fine, others don't. I am one of the others. The best way to tune, IMHO, is to take the car to a tuner who uses a Dyno to tune with. You can also have the tuner custom tune the car for what you want.

Generally a tune isn't done unless you have made some modifications like headers, cam, heads, etc. This is when you get the best value for the tune. But even with no mods a tune can make the car some better than stock and coax a few more ponies out of the stock engine.

Other things to think about are "can the computer be returned to stock" if you need to. I have read where one of the popular tuning softwares, LS2Edit, defaults to locking the new tune and not allowing the stock to be reinstalled. It would be worth talking to your tuner about.

I have no personal experience with tuners in your area. Perhaps someone in your neck of the woods can chime in on who's who among tuners.

Chuck at Corvettes of Westchester IS THE BEST!!!. I know right now he is using the latest version of HP Tuners for the C-6's and he said that he should have EFI live very shortly. As far as the tuning goes there are so many parameters that can be changed. GM leaves ALOT of room for improvement as far as the stock computer program goes. Remember they are shipping these cars all over the country, some states have different emissions requirements than other states (like California) and GM has to account for all of this and then some. When you get your car tuned, there are so many things that are improved, like timimg, torque management, cooling fans, airflow, and so much more. Also any modifications you do are only being held back by the stock program, even if it is only an intake and a free flowing exhaust. Chuck will fully optomize your car based on the modifications you have, and of course your personal preferences. In the wrong hands a tuner who does not know his a** from his elbow can cause serious damage to your car. I had Chuck do my car before I had him do a Borla exhaust and Vararam intake and the difference even with a totaly stock car was amazing to say the least. After Chuck did the exhaust and intake he re-tuned the car and it was even better. I never got any check engine lights, just alot more power throughout the entire RPM range. Also alot of guys talk about getting your car tuned on a Dyno, but I like the way Chuck tunes the cars. He first downloads your stock program, uploads his performance tune and then you and him do numerous test runs with the computer hooked up to your car. Chuck is able to look at all of your readings on the laptop and keeps making adjustments until your car is fully optomized. That is why sometimes Chuck could take a few hours to tune your car, he just doesn't throw in a quick tune and tell you to go by by!!. Also where do you drive your car all the time? On the road, right, not on a dyno!! Also especially with an intake system, when you tune the car on the street your getting real world air flow readings, not like when your car is on the dyno. Dynos are good to give you an idea about how much power your making, but every dyno is different. Also Chuck charges $500.00 for his tuning and once you pay for a tune fromm Chuck, you never pay again. When EFI live comes out, you get a free upgrade!, if you do more modifications to your car, you get a free tuning upgrade.

Is a hand held tuner such as Diablosport not worth the money, or not effective?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tun can be:

An old British measurement of liquid.
A large cask for liquids, especially wine.
A measure of liquid capacity, particularly one equivalent to around 252 imperial gallons (954 litres).
A large cask, particularly one holding a volume equivalent to 2 butts, or 252 gallons.

As apposed to tuning, making a car faster...

Thanks BigJoe. I thought the comment was in response to my post about Diablosport.

Hazchris, I see you live in Rockville Center; I live in Floral Park.

I don't know the first thing about tuning but I have seen ads in Vette magazine about the DiabloSport Predator. I was wondering if you or anyone else has any experience with this or similar tuning products.

I'm sure Chuck is all you and others say he is, I'm just curious about these gadgets. For you and I it's a short drive up to Westchester to visit Chuck but most others may not be so fortunate to have someone like him in their backyard.

Hey I dont know about a diablo, I cant see it having as many parameter adjustments as what I saw chuck use. When I was at chucks there was a guy from canada, who has sent his computer in the mail to chuck a couple of times for a tune a some follow up tweaks, seems like the guy was happy enough to keep doing business with chuck. I agree , some guys live too far and a diablo MIGHT be one solution, I would rather travel to one of the many ,many fine supporting guys from this board and get the personal touch. ever go to the OBI, we are always there on sunday mornings, a nice line of c-6's ,hope to see you there, also check out the northeast section for dyno day on the 15 of oct, me and craig are going, want to join us for some fun in conn. ?
