First, can anyone explain why the 05' are taking such a hit for resale? I have been looking and everyone starts by asking for 45k with less than
8k miles but they can not sell them. I have seen some people drop their price as low as 40k in the end. Is there an issue with the 05 that I'm not aware of?
If you were looking for a C6 which year would you buy?
Would you add the Z51 or not? Is it true the brakes squeak with the
Z51 option?
I bought my 05 in May this year for $42,500..fully loaded coupe with some mods.. I think they guy just had to sell it fast, and I bought it after only one day of posting on Autotrader. And I was only a day or so from inking an 06, loaded for $54k...
There have been some problems with the 05s: DBS, delaminating roofs, fuel sender card problems, static in the radios, radios going dead, minor manual gear shifter problems. Also, you've got to remember the 05s are now 2 years old.
I bought my fully optioned '05 for around $47K (MSRP $54K) Since it is now a 2 year old car, even though I've only owned it for a year, I wouldn't expect to get much more than $40K for it. Depreciation of $5-7K a year is actually pretty good on almost any car. I don't see that as "taking a hit".
As for the Z51 squeaking brakes, Yeah they squeak but there are aftermarket pads that eliminate the squeak completely. No big deal...
That is the bottom line is age and how bad someone wants them. I don't believe it's the issues that lowers the price because there are still plenty of issies out there for 06 and 07 including quality from the factory. I bought by loaded 05/A4 HUD, NAV, Z51 and all a year ago when it was only 8 months old for $45K out the door, tax, title, tag. Yes I knew the sales manager at the dealership it was traded in at but still a great price back then. Real Estate holds value not cars and every year someone comes out with a new street demon or a Vette challenger. I don't worry about all the bs I just drive and love what I have.
I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a 2005 just because it was a 2005 model. My 2005 coupe has been virtually trouble free. There were some 'issues' affecting the early C6s but there are also 'issues' affecting all model year cars. There really hasn't been any dramatic changes from one model year to the next.
With the release of each new model year, previous year models depreciate further. The C6 is a relatively new model for Corvette, as time goes on, more and more C6s are produced and consequently more ealier models are being sold-off. It's supply and demand. This is also the time of year when car buyers are waiting for the new year's model to be released and dealers are often pricing units to move....they want to reduce the inventories.
All things considered, I would always recommend purchasing the newest model year car you can.
I dont think there is anything wrong with '05s (Im looking at them too), but considering you can buy a brand spanking new base model for 39.9K, and a base 6M with Z51 for 44K, it is tough for someone to fork over 40K for a used 2 year old car. Also get 100K warranty on an 07. I am struggling with that every day. For me to get an 05 it would have to be fully loaded and under 38K, otherwise I may as well get a brand new '07..... thats my $.02
Thanks for all the responses. I guess I am looking at this a little differently. I believe that if your going to buy a vette why not buy it with the options. I would like to see the 3LT, chrome wheels, maybe 2 tops, don't need the Nav. With these options a new 07 will cost me 53k.
I looked at base model, "plain Janes", but the car felt empty. I want some of the upgrades in my vette. G
