This is the second time I've posted about this issue in the past 2 years...the first was probably 6 months after I picked up my new 05. From dead center on the start button to about 1/2 inch down there is a crack in the plastic...I can feel it if I run my finger over it. When I first noticed this I had it replaced at the dealer...and now it is there again...and it wasn't after they replaced it. Does anyone have this same problem? I realize it is a small detail and may not even be noticieable unless you really take the time to look...I thought at first it was just a fluke or maybe pushing too hard...but it has happened again and I hardly push in the button as it is. Anyone else got this problem? I'm beginning to think it may be a design flaw and too much repetitive pressure is causing the plastic to crack slightly. Thoughts?
I've got a 2005 coupe that I purchased with 4,000 miles on it. It now has 6,000 miles and I haven't had any problems at all, including the one you explained. Sounds very strange.
I had some of the black paint scratch off, fixed with a toothpick and a little flat black paint.
Several mentions on the forum of the switch falling back into the dash.
But I haven't heard of cracks.
Mine is 2 1/2 years old now and daily driver.
exactly...it's a fine crack...a hairline crack...like i said, this is the second time this has happened...so, I'm either pushing too hard (which I know I am not) or there is something wrong with the switch...my car was in the 1st 5 months of production...so who knows? I suggest everyone have a look...most 05 owners are just know beginning to find new little things here and there...keep looking

My car is number 28,000 built in the month of May as well (2/3 into the production run for that year). I had it in once because the start button fell into the dash, but I'm not sure if they replaced the switch or not.
I have 31K on the clock now, so I'm ready to take her in for some final waranty work (service active handling etc.)

My 05 is a daily drive also with 40k on the odometer. Quite a lot of the black paint is gone from the start button and both door buttons such that at night, bright green lights glare from the doors.

Is it possible that you are applying too much force when you start the car? Even though you may think you are not pushing too hard, you may be. All I need is a light tap on mine to bring the car to life. If you are pushing at all, it may be too much.
Every night I'm outside with the hood open trying to read head numbers, looking at areas folks had problems with , now I have to go out and check the ignition button. Neighbors are gonna think im doing Meth. All I need is one of those headbands with a flashlight on it and I'm in.
What's up with all the 05's in here with less than 9000 miles, are you saving it for something like a collector item? Why not drive the cars I just don't get it?

They are probably sick of going to the dealer to get it fixed.
