Default Computer reprogram for wheel change

Hope this doesnt seem like a dumb question, but if I go with 19 & 20 wheels will I need to get my computer reprogramed to reflect correct speed etc?

it depends more on your tire size than wheels. if the overall height from top to bottom is the same then no you need no re-programming. if it's taller or shorter then yes you need reprogramming.

go here, plug in your original tire size and your new tire size, and it will calculate the difference.

Great link. That link should be in the FAQ sticky even if it is for a Miata.

I wondered about something... I had an 84' camaro back in the early 90's it was a V6 5spd. I added IROC rims to it and had P225's (F) and P245's (R). After mounting them on I noticed the car felt a bit slower. I think it was because the wider tires, the engine must have had to work a bit harder because the car was feeling more ground. Damn come to think of it the car handled turns rather nicely (it had the F41 suspension). I assume you might experience a similar thing if you get wider tires, I dont know for sure, just a thought.

width doesn't affect roll out or speedometer. However if the tire is taller it is a bit harder for the car to get them rolling, I'm betting the wheel/tire combo you changed to weighed more therefore increasing rotational mass which is the worst kind of wieght you can add to a vehicle. You can eaisly tell a SOTP difference if you go from heavier to lighter wheels or vice-versa.

Rotational inertia is the product of mass and the distance from the center of rotation the mass is located. So even if a taller wheel/tire combo weighed the same, it would still have greater rotational inertia. Double whammy. That's another reason, besides the fact that the gumby wheels are ugly, that they hurt performance, because more of the weight of the wheel is at the rim instead of at the center.

The effect of my after-market, upsized wheels/tires is pretty much inconsequential but....can you reprogram your C6 to compensate the speedometer for non-stock tire sizes??
