June 13, 2007 I became the proud owner of my 1st corvette. A 2005 C6. With 1800 miles on this beauty I cannot understand why @ start up there is a strange oder coming from the A/C. Is there a filter I could change?
I had the same problem. But mine smelled like a urinal. The coils on the evaporator or condenser(cant remember which) had fungus growing in and on it. You need to bring it to the dealer or an a/c shop so they can clean and disinfect it.
Well, to be specific, it only smelled like it when you put the air on. I thik its a pretty common thing. If not than maybe somebody was pissing in my car.
Chances are there is some mold on your in cabin air filter. Replace that and your odors are likely to disappear.
Open the hood. It sits on the passenger side - 2-3 clips - it inserts horizontally.
If you are in a HOT area, when in AUTO mode, the AC recalculates more. That may cause mold build up. Switch recirc “OFF” more frequently.
1. Take out the cabin air filt.
2. Brush it off.
3. Back blow with air.
4. Spray it with Lysol
5. Ensure you turn recirc “OFF” occasionally in the future
I run my blower with the AC compressor off for a little while before shutting down to dry out the evaporator coils to try to minimize this.
It's happened on every C5 & C6 I've had. Even talked to Dave Hiull about it once. Seems like a TSB came out for humid climates that incorporated some relay to run blower post shutdown to dry and also listed procedure for disinfecting coil. Not sure if this TSB still applies to the C6, but assume it does.
Regarding the post above on not using recirc., I think that would actually hurt the situation, as recirc. is relatively dry conditioned air vs. outside air at a higher moisture content.
Anybody have some pics of where the cabin filter is located... is it easy to find? Its a bit late but I am going to look for t tomorrow! My car, 02 c5 with 12k stinks EVERY morning lately.. Thank you if you can help me locate the filter!

It's near the top of the engine bay on the passenger side, kinda near the battery. This is for the C6, not sure about the C5.

The cabin air filter that the above posters are describing is on a C6 Corvette (2005-2008). You won't find it there for a 2002 C5.
I've had the same problem with my '05 (12K miles). Replaced the filter with no change in the odor. Dealer has a disinfectant on order as per a TSB so we'll see if that helps. By the way, an area dealer ran an ad to replace the C6 passenger compartment filter for a "special price" of only $49.95. I bought a Purolator Cabin Air Filter, part no. C25623, from Advance Auto for $12.05 including tax and it took me 5-10 minutes to do the replacement.

so can anyone tell me how to get to the cabin filter on the c5's.. my car still stinks when i turn on the ac... then it goes away in 30 seconds or so! thank you for your help.. Jesse
I've had the same problem with mine. After hours of water test it turned out to be a small gap in the boding of the area between the cabin air filter area and the body of the car. The only way to fix is to remove the cal cover and and seal it up with rtv silicone. i replace windshields for a living and water leaks are the most common cause of a mold smell. This is very common with GM cars. it can be fixed very easy, but it takes a lot of time to figure out. Also no smell for a good four months now!!
