The other night something nailed my windshield and put a nice nickel sized chip/crack in my line of site. Even more annoying is the fact that NO ONE was in front of me for half a mile. (I'm sticking to my claim that it was a meteorite, haha).
Anyways, now I have the annoying task of getting my windshield replaced, since it's (apparently) illegal here to do a chip repair when it's in the line of site. Replacing is a better option for me since the chip will just annoy the living hell out of me anyway. So my question is, what should I be looking out for to make sure I get the windshield replaced correctly? Is there a difference in non-HUD vs HUD windshields on the c6's?

Also, on another note, recently the top of my windshield frame has been making creaking noises when the top is in place. Seems the plastic portion is a bit loose. Anybody else had this problem?
NAGS book lists 3 windshields, One that just lists as Solar DW1587, One that lists HUD Solar DW1588, and One that lists HUD Solar W/GPS DW1589. Now with that said I am not sure how much a difference it would be to have the one without maybe reflection not as good or something not sure. I haven't done one of these cars myself so couldn't say on that but I have a friend that does auto glass and I remember him saying the OEM GM windshields were less expensive than what he could get from LOF, Guardian, PPG, etc.
I would say just call around and get some good ball park figures. Probably first place I would try is your local dealership and ask them who they use since they probably would have some experience on Vettes. Definately wouldn't want a rookie working on it heh I know if mine ever breaks I won't be tackeling it on my own.

Reason: Put in NAGS part numbers
When I bought my 05 a few months ago the windshield was cracked. The dealer informed me if I was to purchase the vette they would pay for a new windshield. Fair enough and no big deal, I ended up by the vette. Dealer set up an appointment with "Safe Lite Glass" and told me to bring it over to the shop in two days. When I brought it over there they were about to remove the crack one and swap it out when they found a problem. The shield Safe Lite ordered didn't have a "valance trim" across the upper section on the windshield. Long story short, if you have a 1,2 or 3LT the shield has to be ordered from the dealer via VIN #. Two weeks later Safe Lite called me and said bring your vette over the shield is here and waiting. So I did. After it was installed I asked how much the bill was that the dealer will have to pay. Windshield and labor was............. 1,300.98. WOW. This was for a 3LT.
My 2006 non-HUD windshield cost $780 to replace at the dealer.
Sad thing is that I have three new stone chips in the new glass and just got a huge stone chip in my other sedan. Road construction in New England eats windshields.
A word of advice when you get the new windshield -- immediately check the interior rear view mirror -- they do not remove and reinstall very well. It might be really loose and shake as you drive blurring everything in the mirror. Make them fix/replace that too.
I have put five windshields (in three Vettes); just be sure they order the right one,i.e., HUD, etc. as mentioned above. It is a PITA, but a "must do"; thank goodness I carry good insurance......
Since you said you have the HUD, there are 2 possible windshields for your car. One if it has OnStar and another if it does not. The difference is that the OnStar version has a bracket attached to it for the OnStar black box near the top of the windshield.
Interestingly, there was a lot on this when I lived in the C5 section. A lot of talk about expensive HUD windshields because of special coatings, etc. (which I think may have been a hold over from the early HUD days). However, many guys there just replaced it with the standard windshield and guess what? They couldn't tell any difference, the HUD worked just fine. I'm interested in the experts weighing in because from what I've read, it makes no difference.
I had these prices for windshield only: Fits 05-07 (maybe 08) GM
no hud $495.00; hud, no gps $651.90; hud & gps $678.54
Being here in NH it's bound to happen sooner or later.
Everytime I've replaced a windshield (not on my Vette--yet) it's been through my insurance company, which uses Safe-T-Lite. I pay the deductible, and the work is guaranteed for as long as I own the car.
As you know there are special windshields for HUD equipped C6's. Get the correct windshield. Hopefully you (and everyone) carries full glass coverage on their insurance so it's a virtually free replacement.
FWIW, not long after I bought my C6 I too suffered a small chip/crack directly in my line-of-sight. I had never had a windshield repaired before but being this was my new Vette, I decided to try the repair. It worked extremely well. In fact, you really have to look for it to even find where the repair was made. Granted, sometimes a repair won't work but perhaps it's worth a try. You can always replace the windshield if the repair isn't to your satisfaction.
A rock out of nowhere! I've commented on that once before....it puzzle's me that you can drive along with no cars near you and then some object strikes your windshield (often with some force). You say meterorites. I have sort of a working theory about aliens but maybe you're right.

Thanks for the replies.
Can someone elaborate on this shield/valance trim? What exactly is that?
For those of you wondering about the repairs, I was told it was illegal to do so if the chip is in line of site because the substances they use can potentially refract light into your eyes, thereby adversely impacting your driving. I don't know if it depends on size (my insurance agent specifically used "quarter sized" as a description) but I agree, that option would be much less of a pain than replacing my entire windshield. Here in TX, at least with my insurance agency, the windshield replacement falls under comprehensive insurance, which I have a $500 deductible. Amazing how one little act of god/aliens can do so little damage and cost so much money.

The valence trim is just a cheap thin black molding piece that runs across the entire upper section of the windshield. It comes only on the windshields ordered from GM. Without this the Targa would have cracked my windshield Safe Lite was going to install.
