Can anyone recommend what alignment machines to ask for that don't damage aftermarket chrome wheels?

Default Tire wear

I have a C5 & C6, both have been re-aligned. Ilearned an expensive lesson on C5, outside of tire new, inside of tire bald. This is set to GM specs. Fortunately, a friend of mine, who owns several Goodyear stores is a Vette owner, and made me aware of the problem and re-aligned. Does it affect handling? If you ran Road Atlanta it will probably take 1 sec off your time. Find someone who knows about Vettes.

It is not the equipment that does a good alignment. It is an experienced Tech. Newer computerized machines just make it faster and easier to get the readings. Later! Frank

I have the exact opposite tire wear problem. The outside of the "drivers side' tire is wearing out, not the inside. The passenger side is absolutely normal with decent tread left. My mileage is 25,400 on original GY Supercar tires.

On my C5 and C6, negative camber up to .5 degree (that's 1/2 degree negative) did not seem to have much effect on tire wear. But toe-out ate the inside of my fronts in a hurry.

Yes, there is a difference in equipment and an even bigger difference in the person who does it. It is nice to know how to do it yourself if you need to. Only simple tools are required. http://www.davidfarmerstuff.com/align.pdf

If you measure it yourself before you take it in and ask for a before and after reading you will find out how good they were at measuring "before" which gives you a clue about their "after" accuracy. Then measure again just to prove it.

I used to do front end alignments for a living. The first equipment was made by Snap-On and was magnetically attached to the front hub. ( no rear to worry about back then) We used a toe bar to set the toe. It worked similar to Dave's method. Trying to adjust anything on a Vette without a lift is a waste of my time. Now my Duramax is another story. Even something as simple as one low tire, an uneven parking spot, bent rim or a tire with side wall ripples will screw the measurements. The Tech I take my Vettes to has been in the business over 20 years. He is also a Vette driver. He can take one look at his first readings and tell me how the car is driving. I found him by asking around. Everyone I asked recommended him. He does not adjust to plus or minus. He used the desired setting. Ask around, you will find a good Tech. Later! Frank
