Checked my 800 mile '08 today. Picked up the 3/4 drive 1 5/16" socket from Sears and fits very well. (the nut measures about 33.25mm). I started with 80 ft lbs. on the wrench and both sides had to move 30-60 degrees before clicking - I'd call that loose.. don't think it was really hurting anything, but not the way it should be either. I plan to 272 loctite mine at somewhere around 150ft lbs.

I think Permatex 27200 is equivalent to Loctite 272 but I could not find that either.
Just check the torque first. I have been starting at 20 ft-lb and working up to 120 just to see how tight they are. If they are 120 ft-lb or higher, leave them alone. I "think" the factory still tightens them to 118 ft-lb. The 160 ft-lb torque and Loctite are only used if the nuts work loose.

John

I had trouble locating Loctite 272 locally and I finally got the GM thread locker from my Chevy dealer (the GM thread locker is Loctite 272).

Just checked mine and here are the results:
Passenger side, i tried 80 lb first, the ranch moved ever so slightly not even an 1/8 of a turn. torqued at 150.
Driver side i checked it all the way to 160 and it was very tight.
I hope i was not doing anything wrong but i think mine was tight enough, i got almost 1900 miles.

If you can't find Loctite 272 or the equivalent Permatex 27200, Permatex 27100 is readily available at Pep Boys for about $5 and a pretty close substitute; it would be much better than using nothing. I believe both Loctite and Permatex brands are owned and made by the same company.
Both 272/27200 and 27100 are "RED" high-strength thread lockers; the difference is the 272/27200 is a high-temperature high-strength thread locker. The recommended 272/27200 is rated at 450 deg F and 27100 is rated at 300 deg F. The difference may only be important if you expect to track your car and generate a lot of heat with the rear brakes...the General must have had some reason for specifying Loctite 272.
In either case, the torque required to break the thread locker is about 10 ft-lb, so the thread locker only serves to keep fasteners from moving once they are torqued.

After reading this post I decided to check mine. It's an 08 and I picked it up Dec. 07. Have 2100 miles on it. Both sides where loose. Pass. side I turned adout a 1/4 turn before it even started to get tight. Driver side went 1/2 a turn. But I did put new nuts on and loctite.
