Be nice and change lanes. If they follow and continue to tailgate you, pick up your cell phone and call the police. Explain the situation and give them the license number of the car and your location.
I live in central texas and use a lot of 2 lane asphalt backroads where the speed limits are extremely inconsistent in how they are set. Some very open, flat, well-paved, unpopulated farm roads are 40 while I have seen others that are criss-crossed with interchanges into subdivisions and driveways yet have a 60mph speed limit. Anyway, the point is that as I use these, I tend to want to run what the road should support (ok flame away) and as a result I come upon cars who seem to think all roads should have a 40mph speed limit. I never "tail gate" defined as 1 car-length off their bumper (I tend to stay 2,3 or more back), but I do end up riding behind them since I am trying to go faster than they are. I will pass when safe to do so (also another weird thing about texas back roads as they all seem to be "no passing" no matter what the situation). So, not sure if I am a tailgater by anyone's definition but I definitely get frustrated as folks on these back roads or major roads like to drive at whatever slow speed makes them feel comfortable and seem oblivious or sometimes even consciously averse to others who might want to safely go faster than they are.
Just wondering, if original Poster was in the "fast lane", and maybe not the fastest vehicle on the road? Not accusing, just wondering! I for one do get irratated when someone is going slower in the left lane.
Yesterday morning I had a young gal in a SUV that would NOT back off. I tapped the brakes and finally slowed to 10 MPH - she did not move. When she final passed me, after I changed lanes, she shot me the bird!
I wish I was a cop for the minute - "Put their *** in jail". There is no respect for other peoples property or safety!!!
Now, I feel better...............
You were probably in Plano! They are terrible down here!
If you are talking about someone tailgaiting because you are in anything mroethne a one lane , and you are in the left lane going speed limit. You are wrong. If someone tailgaits me,and Im going over speed limit on a one lane, thne I slam on my brakes, and they get the idea. In a two lane you are in the wrong for not moving over because
1. You are actually breaking the law by staying in the left lane, and even more so when someone is trying to pass using the left lane and you are not letting hmi.
2. world does not revolve around you, let people through
If you are in the right lane and he is tailgaiting you instead of going into the left, then he is an idiot, and brake check him or w\e you like to do, or don't do anything. It annoying but doesnt really affect yo if hes tailgaiting so let him be.
You are not the police to enforce speed limits, so do not try to act like you are, a good quote from george carlin "have you ever noticed anybody going slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?"

No. I would not have posted if that was the case, since it would be my own fault causing the tailgating situation if he/she wanted to pass me. Most interstate roads in my area are 4 to 5 lanes. This happens in the center lanes also. I know some will say even the center lanes are to be used for passing only, but because of traffic congestion, it is just not practical to only use the far right lane for main travel. I have been in the right lane doing the speed limit or more with a tailgater, increased my speed (non aggressively), moved to the next left lane, and the driver will pass me on the right. I received my driver’s license in a state where, by law, the left lane is for passing only. I have traveled a lot in Europe where most will use the left lane only for passing.
Crap....didn't mean to start ranting again. Sorry, KENZ51.

Pflugerville--anybody who lives in a town with that name needs to have strange things happen to him/her. I can't even spell that thing correctly.

No, you have the right to be pissed. I lived in Europe for four years a few years ago. In some countries it was against the law for a car in a slower lane (our right lanes for example) to pass anyone in a faster lane. Most Europeans have to prove they can actually drive before getting a license. Today, some States (like Texas) have even dropped the "highway" portion of their driving test.

Damn right, we got better things to do with our time. That beer won't drink itself.
Tailgating is common in D/FW, even if you're in the far right lane going ten mph faster than the posted speed, you'll still get some ya-hoo in a SUV right on your a$$.
Sometimes if I'm on a road that I'm familiar with, I'll late-brake a corner and that usually does it; no more tailgater Off-ramps are espeically useful in this regard...
I'm not sure people ever look at their speedometer in situations like this. Target fixation at its finest.
I'm usually a pretty laid-back driver but tailgaters are cut no slack.
It "ain't" the fast lane, it's the passing lane. Get over where you belong in the DRIVING lane. Do that nonsense in Europe you'll get a stack of tickets about 11-feet tall - until you get the message that it ain't the "fast" lane - none of them are, even if it's 8-lanes in each direction. They're all passing lanes except the far right line. The far right lane is reserved for buses and trucks. So, get the hell over where you belong - in the driving lane!
