Now that I've read the entire thread, I think we know that if you're in the left lane, you're not being tailgeted - you are in the way. We're talking about two lane roads, or multiple lane roads where you're not in the left lane, and someone is still on your azz, even when they could go around. It happens often around here.
but if its illegal to exceed the speed limit and you are GOING the speed limit, that idiot behind you shouldnt be going faster, and shouldnt be following too closely , so why should you have to move over?
Of course you NEVER go above the speed limit right?
The answer to your question is obvious, you are plugging up traffic flow and you make people pass YOU on the right which is dangerous to you and others on the road.
Your way of thinking is vigilante car driving.
"slower traffic KEEP RIGHT"
"KEEP RIGHT, pass left ONLY"
These are the traffic signs on the side of the road... have you ever seen them?
Yes , really... in fact Leos can give you a ticket if you stay in the left, and don't quote me on the number, but I believe its 1.5 miles without passing anyone.
Answer to your question....it's the law that says you move over !
theres also a law that states the speed limit
if you were clocked by a speed trap doing XX km/hr over the speed limit and your excuse was "i was passing someone" like everyone here is saying its "legal" to do so, do you think it would get you out of a ticket?
Regarding Tailgating rant / I tie a bag of small rock (jacks) under my car and when someone is tailgating I pull on the string that opens the bag and watch how fast they back off. This has been way to much fun!!
Your question has garnered too many responses already.
In case you haven't realized it. You drive one the the four, (4), yes FOUR fastest automobiles in the world.

If you let anything other than a Lambo, Ferrari, or Viper pester you then you need to be horizontal on therpists couch trying to answer the question. "Now why did you buy a Corvette?"
If you cant answer. You need to sell it. Get yourself a nice little Miata and live happily tailgated ever after.
Slaming on the breaks could cost you your life or another persons, or at least a hefty repair. I just give it a short WOT burst if all else fails and make space between me and the tailgater.
Since I bought the C6, Tailgaters have disappeared! Why is that????
My pet peeve is the left lane bandits-normally they are almost always women in SUV's (mostly with a cell phone stuck in their cauliflower ears) or pickup "tucklets" drivers who I guess are pretending to be a cop or something slowing down traffic.
Maybe this should be a different thread but since it deals with speed I will ask it. What speed do most of you drive on the highway? Do you speed way over the limit? Just a little over? or do the speed limit? Just curious as to everyones driving habits. Personally I try to keep my speed around 70 to 72 and yes I know I am passed constantly but I figure the minute I decide to act cute and speed up in a vette then I will be pulled over.
I was driving South towards Atlanta on 515, a white van tailgating, I was going the speed limit this guy would not pass even though it was a four lane..We meet the state patrol i just knew when he turned around he was after me but instead he stopped the tailgater.

Most times I try not and drive over 5-7 mph over the limit.

Most times i do 5 over on roads with 60 to 75mph speed limits.
Just today coming back from sway bar install some nut in a big SUV just blew up on my tail, i was doing 75mph and he must have been doing 90, i just moved over and let him go.
I detest the left lane hogs, i dont care if Im going 5 over or 50 over on the highway i pass on the left and jump back to the middle. i have never been tailgated on the highway, though once someone came up really fast on me (i was at 60 in a 55) and i tapped by brakes, he moved over. with the left lane hogs it usually only takes a quick flash of the brights and they get the message, if not i patiently wait until i can pass then tell then what place i think their in with my hand.
as for deturing tailgaters i get alot in traffic on main streets while out cruising. i set one butt huhher straight by waiting until the last minute to switch lanes quickly due to a parked car in my lane, needless to say he had an angel with him to avoid a full 40mph collision, after skidding to a stop he stayed 50ft away from me, problem solved.
I do 75 or 80, which is faster than some people, but I don't tailgate doing that and I pay attention when I drive. No talking on the phone, texting, messing with iPod, none of that.

You are completely missing to point here.
Most of us will accept the consequences of speeding. I would never give the lame excuse "I was passing a slower vehicle" if nabbed by a LEO. The point here is, as has been eloquently stated by a number of posters, stay out of the left lane unless you are overtaking.
It is NOT a God given right to tie up passing lane and, if you are, you are not being tailgated, you are being asked to get out of the way.
