"IIRC the original design in in 1952 ( for the 1953 Corvette )was to have the US flag on the right side as well. However, it was quickly discovered that the US flag can not be part of any emblem and sold from profit. And remains so to date.
Therefore the fleur de lis was added to honors Louis Chevrolet".
