I use a battery tender when down for a week or more and then there is no questions. I also plug in a volt meter so that I can monitor the battery.

Only the 05 HAS to be shut off in reverse. I had a 05 and now a 07 and the people that write the operators manual should be fired. Found lots wrong.

The reason the '06-'08 manuals specify to park the car in reverse has nothing to do with the '05 shut down procedure. Reverse is the recommended gear to park a manual car in as that gear has the best chance of holding the car in place in the event of a parking brake failure. The added resistance of that gear in addition to the engine compression stand a chance of preventing it from rolling away. The '05 manual was specifically worded to include the caution about battery drain from not shutting the car down with a shift to reverse. That wording is gone from subsequent years manuals.

2005 note on shutting down a manual tranmission.

Parking Your Vehicle
(Manual Transmission)
Before you get out of your vehicle, move the shift lever
into REVERSE (R) and firmly apply the parking
brake. Once the shift lever has been placed into
REVERSE (R) with the clutch pedal pressed in, you
can turn the ignition off and release the clutch. If
you attempt to exit the vehicle without being in
REVERSE (R), the Driver Information Center (DIC) will
display SHIFT TO REVERSE and a chime will sound.

Notice: If you do not put a manual transmission in
REVERSE (R) before exiting your vehicle, the
battery will drain and could be damaged. Always put
a manual transmission in REVERSE (R) before
shutting off the engine and exiting the vehicle.
2006 and subsequent years manual:

Parking Your Vehicle
(Manual Transmission)
Before you get out of your vehicle, move the shift lever
into REVERSE (R) and firmly apply the parking brake.
Once the shift lever has been placed into REVERSE (R)
with the clutch pedal pressed in, you can turn the ignition
off and release the clutch.

I know all of that I was pointing out the inaccuracies of the OM. In my 05 there were literally a couple dozen of omissions of important info, totally wrong info, of just touching on the subject. If I had my druthers the people that wrote or proofread that manual would have been fired...
Way too much was/is dominated by lawyer speak, and not enough of technical matters.

The 07 manual is better but contains a lot of wrong or misleading info. (Same thing too much lawyer ) Not wonder most do not read it. My manual is away in the car which is away for the winter, or I would point out things that are nonsense.

A lot of dealers are STILL telling people to shut down 06/7/8 Vettes in reverse do to battery problems. I hope I have explained my post!
