Last time I looked, there was a big difference in price between regular and high test. If the owner's manual says you can use regular, what would be the advantage to using high test? I can think of a few, but only if the car is not designed to run on regular (or you notice pinging etc.).
If I can burn regular, I can save the difference and buy the wife some flowers for letting me buy my C6
The car will lose power if you run regular gasoline...that's a fact.
I can't speak for all here, but I want every last HP I paid for running at full gallop.
Anb the price difference on a fill-up is less than $3.00 regular vs premium....if someone is that frugal, maybe a Corvette wasn't a good choice to begin with.
What's your compression ratio and at what altitude are you driving. Consider the basics. Even though I put 91 octane in my C4 I'm sure I could get by with 87 or 86 which is sold here at 5200' altitude. The purpose of using higher octane is to slow down the fuel burn preventing pre-ignition (deiceling)before piston top dead center (ping) and develop maximun fuel burn past the pistons top dead center. This is very evident at higher altitudes where less oxygen also creates a slower burn making it unnecessary for the higher octane fuels. Talk about more power. I love driving down to lower altitudes.
Whatever makes you happy in putting 87, 89 or 91 it's all up to you,
we condemn people in putting the wrong octane but fail to realize it's your car. I know we want the best for the vette but you have to look at certain circumstances. They where traveling and 87 is what they had, saving a couple of dollars, not usings its full power potential, and so on. Whatever floats your boat!
Some gas stations have "specials" per week as concerns premium fuel. They will sell premium at the regular price one day per week. There are two gas stations in my town that run these deals. You may want to check around your city and see if you can find a station that does this. Then all you have to do is fill up on the "special" day.
I always wondered how tightly regulated the actual octane values are. How can we be sure when we buy premium that we are getting it ? I am sure gas dealers can arrange to have the wrong fuel in the wrong storage tanks. I am equally sure that the refineries can play around with what they are delivering. Who really knows ?

If that's the choice you make make for the fuel you use in your Vette, then that's fine. It's your choice to make and you shouldn't have any problems going that route. I just have a different viewpoint and choose to use premium in mine.

We had a station in town that did that and I took advantage of it too, but they stopped the special about a year ago so I moved on to a different station.
I tried 89 in mine a couple times, and I lost 2.5 miles per gallon..... Cost of the car has nothing to do with why I use 93, the owners manual and the MPG are enough for me. I DID hear knocking under hard acceleration also. Same instance with my SUV that recommends Premium. I used 89 and got worse gas mileage so the $$$ was a wash in the end.
If the manual for the Vette said to use regular only, that's what I'd use, assuming the mileage was no different than using Premium. I don't think any car designed to use Regular will get better mileage or more performance by using Premium.

From what I understand, knock sensors will compensate. However, if the computer or knock sensor screws up, I understand your engine will be toast. Also, in my situation, gas mileage and performance suffered.
Not worth it IMHO.
These strings are like car accidents. I hate seeing them but can't help but read them. I especially love the "if you can't afford premium, you shouldn't have a Corvette" and the always popular "I drive my car like it was menat to be driven and need all the HP it came with"...yeah, right...on what track?
Running Regular will not hurt your car. It will lower gas mileage and performance. Personally, on my way back in forth to the airport or the grocery store in my DD Corvette, I don't notice a difference in either performance or mileage but I'm in the minority here who isn't a trained professional race driver. ;-)
What we SHOULD be talking about is why it is important for all you guys to run Premium just to keep up with those of us in black cars since, as everyone knows, black is noticeably, remarkably faster. That's a worthwhile and equally intelligent discussion point!

Wow! You seem so angry. It’s not the question of being FRUGAL; we were discussing what type of fuel can be used in the 08 C6?
It’s sure nice to get opinions from such a (know it all) expert.
Does using regular make you feel inferior to other high test burning rides? How long have you felt this way? Tell us about your childhood.
When the day comes you’re paying my bills, I will do what you say. I paid cash for my 4LT, Velocity Yellow, Linen Leather Wrapped Interior. ..
So the cost of fuel is not the issue, it’s just “what you can burn Discussion”?

Cheers!
I wish I lived near one of you guys claiming regular doesn't get your car pinging, just because I'd like to ride along and hear for myself.
As for Black being fastest, I thought it was the slowest color, because the owners have to spend all of their time with the vehicle parked, polishing out the swirls marks!

Irv, I think you got me there...for average speed, no question. As compared to the old MY C5, this car gets "fondled" a lot more being black...maybe that's the reason black is faster - the wax we require so our cars don't look like h*ll probably make them slip through the air faster.
You're a smart man!
As as for Yellow being faster, well it was in the C5s (when I had that). And the reason the Corvette team uses it is only because after a race, they want the dirty car to look less dirty for all the pictures with the squeeky clean race babes hanging all over them. And, of course, because Corvette's are SOOO superior to anything else, they are even able to win with a slower color. If they ever have real competition, I'm sure they will switch to black.
BTW, I'm open for justifying anything (for a small fee). Send me your ridiculous thoughts and I'll provide completely sound justification. Visa/MC accepted...(Do I need to become a Sponsoring Vendor now??)
