Actually, here in the "Golden State" it's more like $.20 to $.25 per gallon, but your right. If you buy a high performance vehicle and spend the bucks, a couple of extra cents per gallon should not be a big deal.

If you cannot afford premium, you do not afford the Vette.

Even Premium (91) in CA is on the edge for high-performance driving. Using the car for boulevard cruising is an image this car which is not flattering. Incidentally, I care less for it, but among import sports cars owners that is the Vette's stereotype and it is in part true.

Ditto. The traffic is so bad in Southern California the difference is negligable.

I just turned 28,000 miles in my 2005 and have always run regular in it. Have never heard any complaints from the engine.

The cars will run on regular, but just not optimal. My friend has a 2006 A6 C6, and he has always run 89 octane in it. I never knew this, and he never knew he was supposed to be running 91 or better. Last week we had the cars scanned and tuned. The tuner, fellow member Spinmonster, kept saying something was wrong with my friends car, since it was pulling about 16 degrees of timing. He kept saying the car was acting as if it had bad gas, ASSUMING that my friend used the same 93 octane that the rest of us always use. He just couldt get the tuning to work until he asked my friend what grade of gas he was using. Soon as we found out he was using 89, we drained it and replaced it with 93. Car ran awesome and we were able to advance timing to get some more power out of it. The point is, my friend never saw or felt anything wrong while driving his car on 89 octance, even under hard acceleration. But the computer was pulling 16 degrees, which is equivelent to about 32hp. And thats on 89!! I can only imagine how much timing is being pulled, and how much power is being left on the table, when using 87 octane fuel.

I always run 93 and ran 94 when Sunoco still had it around here. I've seen some high volume stations (Wawa, Sheetz) reduced the octane from 93 to 92 and still charge the 93 price. They set up shop and try to put the competiton out of business by selling gas for pennies on the dollar and make money on a cup of coffee. Those running 93 octane because you have a tune or just prefer 93 will shortly learn the game they play.

At the time we thought it might be water in the Station tank, so we just bought some fuel additive and with a little prayer, made it home. I had to drive with the Paddle-Shifters to keep the revs up above 3000 RPM, other wise it would almost stall. You should have seen the tail pipes when we got home, they looked like I had spray painted them flat black. Two months later I got a letter from Shell explaining the situation, the delivery truck put the Diesel in the Premium tank. They did pay for my troubles. Moral of the story, these cars are engineered pretty well and are a lot smarter than in the past.

I bet they had a few lawsuits after that!! I'm sure a few of those cars needed their fuel system replaced...

But of course, Shell can afford it.

and

I tried 89 in mine a couple times, and I lost 2.5 miles per gallon.....
You will loose at least one MPG by droping down one grade.

Let's do the math:

EPA estimate MPG City is 18 MPG.
18 MPG * 18 gallon tank = 324 mile range.
17 MPG * 18 gallon tank = 306 mile range.
18 miles difference.

Gas today in Jacksonville, Fl--- 93 oct. $3.51, 89 oct. $3.41

Cost to fill with 93 oct = $63.18
Cost to fill with 89 oct = $61.38

It costs $1.80 less to fill with 89 than it does with 93 octane.
However you can only go 306 miles. To go the same distance, you have to buy 19 gallons.

19 gallons of 89 oct. @ $3.41 = $64.79 or $1.61 more.

It costs $3.41 more to go 324 miles on 89 oct. than it does with 91.

Where's the savings in that.

Some have reported no problems, some have. I've always burned the highest octane in all of my vehicles out of habit. Something my dad taught me when I was 7 or 8. I used to have a Lexus and I did put regular in it once and before I got 2 miles down the road it started pinging and coughing and going on. I stopped and bought some octane booster. Who knows, maybe there was some moisture in the gas but it was just my dumb luck. My wife runs 87 in her Toyota Sienna van all the time and it runs fine.

Around Chicago here, the difference is more like $0.27 a gallon for premium.
