Total $ mods...
I was considering buying a ZR1 when the prices settle a bit, but am seriously considering leasing a GT-R and keeping my Z06.
But as for mods, well, I've been there and done that. These cars, well non of this is what we can call "cost effective". But modding makes it even less cost effective. Thats why I gave it up.
I actually stopped and looked at all of the money I was spending and had spent and was just honest with myself in calling it what it was. Blown money.
While nowhere close to what you have, I was definitely headed in that direction with no end in sight. Thank goodness I put on the brakes......and I don't mean aftermarket ones.

Now thinking about it hard, you would be dropping an additional 42-43Gs on a new Z06 or atleast 50Gs for the GT-R. Instead if you decide to mod your car with whatever spices things up from interior to exterior to performance and have something with your own signature on it, wouldnt it satisfy you more? I mean you jump from a z06 to a ZR1, its primarily the same stuff with more power and better looks, for an additional 80Gs, wouldnt you rather spend 1/2 of that or 2/3rds of it and keep your car for another 3 yrs where you satisfied your desire to have a newer car(relatively) and also had fun with it?
You will loose that money on a new car as quickly as you would if you were to mod the car, so i think its fairly even, until the new car is completely different and is giving something entirely different from your current car??
I will save the $$ up for the engine swap, and see how I feel then.

If I went to a new car, I would be getting just that, a new, from the ground up, car. Every single solitary part on the car, every single bushing, every push pin, the tires, the wheels,.... every damn thing,.... all brand spankin' new. And improved. And warrantied.
As opposed to adding modifications to a 3 year old car.
I just don't see dumping money into a car which is three years old already, (unless perhaps, its for repairs) money which I know going in, that I will never get more than 10 cents on the dollar back on, and all the time knowing that I will be getting rid of it soon anyway, because its already 3 years old. In two years or less, in all likelihood it will be gone anyway.
This happened to me with my modded C5, when I went to an '05 C6. And when I went from my modded '05 C6, to my current Z06.
Not that I didn't have the money to do it, but had I used the money I spent on mods for both those cars, towards their "successors", I would have been ahead in the game. Finally, I learned my lesson with this one.
Personally, knowing what I know now, I'd rather take the money I would have spent modding my 3 year old car, and put it towards a new one. Just stick it into an account and wait until I was ready to make a move on another one. In my mind, its money better spent.
If I put 10K into the bank as part of my C7 (or whatever) fund, I'm better off than if I dump 10K into a 3 year old '05 C6 modding it.
I'd enjoy my '05 the way it is, stock, its a helluva car as it is, and when its finally C7 time, I will have my whole 10K and then some, plus my '05 to go towards that C7 ( or C6 Z06 ZR1 or whatever).
If I dump that 10k into mods on that '05, I can't expect to get much if any of it back when its C7 time ( or C6 Z06 ZR1 or whatever).
Indeed, not only do I lose that 10k, but my '05's resale is also liable to take a hit because of the mods I made to it, to "personalize it" and "make it mine".
When people start getting into modification expenses which approach, and in some cases actually exceed, the value of the entire car when it was new, it makes even less sense to me.
Throw in some of the issues which are inherent to modding, ie the nature of the beast, and the money and frustration spent to address some of those issues, and I am completely convinced, that for at least some people, it would have been money better spent towards the outstanding balance on the car, if it was financed, or towards a more current model.

That will give you an idea of how badly the guy took a bath on it with all the money spent on mods.
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts

By April, had gone with a Vararam, Cam, Valvetrain, LT's/X Pipe, Clutch, Flywheel. About $6500 Parts, Labor and Tune there.
Left the country, car stayed in the US from April until 3 weeks ago. In the 3 weeks its been here in the UK, it's received a set of wheels, and dual cutouts. $2200 there. Tires to come next week, so theres another $1200 (No more RF's. DR's this time).
So I'm at about $11.5k at the moment in 5 months of actual ownership. Damn. I thought I was at like $6-7k. Lol, thanks a lot. Ouch.
Not to mention the winter build plan of a FAST, TFS 225's, and a new tune. That'll be another $4k. Yikes. Oh well..... cant take it with you when you die.
