Carmax in Virginia Beach wouldnt even talk to me about a vette they had. Figured I couldnt get financed. Oh well, I took my 45,000 Cash and went to Kerbeck Corvette and they had me in one in a matter of minutes. Very easy buying experience.
Gary...... we live just a stones throw apart. When you want to take 'er for a nice curise with some company give me a PM and I'll show ya some very nice twisty roads..........

You got it Buddy I live in Gold River !! but I dont have a car yet I ordred it from John L. Sullivan. This will be my 5th Vette.
That's what they told me and pretty much stuck by it when I tried to bargain. Locally anyway, their prices are asinine, and only for those who are to timid to negotiate or don't know any better.
When you see a car online with CARMAX, you are, pretty much, going to buy the car sight unseen until you arrive to pick it up. They have "pick up points" around the country. For example, if you live in NJ and the car you like is in California, they'll ship it to the pick up point nearest NJ, which is Virginia (for an added cost, of course). You have to get your butt to Virginia to pick the car up, which will be the first time that you see it. From there, you decide whether to take it or not.
I saw a beautiful 2005 coupe that was located in California in November of 2006 when I was shopping for my C6. I asked someone on the Forum who lived nearby to go and take a look at it. He went the next day to see it but, unfortunately (or fortunately), the car was sold by the time he got there. He did call me to tell me that the car was "cherry". The price was about $5k less than market. One of the drawbacks of CARMAX is that they don't correctly list all of the options that the car has, so you don't know what you've got. From other Forum members that have purchased from CARMAX, thEY seem to have had a good experience. Hey, sometimes it's a crapshoot!
I really didnt have reason to,I trusted them however that will be the last time I trust any dealer.
I'm sorry, but I go by the credo of Ronald Reagan, 'trust, but verify'. Anyone selling a used car, be it a dealer or private party, may be hiding something or, in the case of a dealer, may truly be ignorant of the history of the car. I personally wouldn't buy any used car without a close inspection including test drive, an inspection by a trusted mechanic (who has no interest in the sale), and a Carfax. Otherwise you're just asking for trouble.
BTW - given that they did finally take the car back, I cannot see that they were so much dishonest as they were ignorant of the facts.
Carmax can go either way. One thing I am curious about is if you didn't even notice that the car was smoked in (other than the ashtray), what difference does it make if it was smoked in?
I just bought my first Vette from Carmax a few weeks ago and had a great experience. I will say though that they do not pay much attention to detail ... mine had a Corsa put on and they had no idea, but I wasn't going to say anything. Luckily a friend of a friend knew one of the buyers for Carmax and contacted him for me and as it turned out, this guy not only was able to give me info on the car but he was actually the buyer who found the car. So I was able to be told that the car was in great shape and only needed a detail before they put it on the lot (my mechanic would later confirm this). Moral of the story ... do your homework and you'll get what you want. I'm sure you'll be happier with the new one though, so congrats!
I bought an Explorer for my wife from Carmax several years ago - had a very good experience - definitely recommend the extended warranty. It saved me lots of money. The car wasn't great (Big Blue...), but the deal and the warranty were good - have recommended it to many friends without a complaint.
Carmax has a very plain 3 day return policy... they wouldnt take it back right away? what was the nature of the delay in taking it back?
I also agree with the above re the return policy.
Plus, if OP is not buying from local CarMax and found the car, per lavla, online then I guess he never saw the car until it was shipped in to his local CarMax.
That's no different from buying over cars.com or any other internet seller. And then as a buyer you HAVE to exercise all the cautions of buying ANY car essentially sight unseen until the moment you get there. In other words, it's tough to kick the tires when the tires and car aren't there.
If this is the case of OP, I wouldn't knock CarMax; I'd knock caveat emptor and being slightly "unaware," as a buyer.
I'm curious why it took them 6 weeks to take the car back. CarMax has 3 day return policy nationwide. I've a feeling we're not getting the whole story.

BTW, I own shares in CarMax.
actually it's a 5 day money back guarantee
so you didnt notice it was a smokers car for 5 days??
you didnt even test drive a car when you spend 45K? i would test drive any car for that price or lower, even if it is a new car
The fact that they finally agreed to take the car back makes them worth dealing with IMHO. Most other dealers would not. In their defense, someone should have checked the car top to bottom, inside out, BEFORE signing the contract though.
