Am I happy no one was behind my Vette last night. At 50 MPH Out of the corner of my eyes a Deer jumped a fence and crossed the road in front of my Vette. I panic and jammed the brake pedal. I missed the Deer. The shock was how fast the car stopped. Corvettes do have good brakes. No Deer Meat today.
We have alot of those bastards around here also. Had one car that 2 of them ran into the side of! Buddy of mine T-boned one on his motorcycle last week. Killed the deer, totaled his bike. He is ok. Could be pretty bad in a Vette since they sit so close to the ground. Might come in through the windshield.
Hitting wild animals or livestock is no joke...they can do some serious damage to car and driver. Fortunately, both you and the car are fine and yes, the C6 does have good brakes.
A few years back, a good sized white tail hit my 3/4 ton Suburban. He bolted almost diagonally out of the early morning shadows from my left accross the front of my Suburban. I was doing about 55 mph, jammed the brakes and hit him almost instantly flush on the front. The impact caused over $4,000.00 damage. I couldn't find him along the side of the road and it was still pretty dark. Sadly, I don't think he made it too far.
Hitting a deer in the C6...the deer might just come right through the windshield.

Happened to me about a week ago coming home from my friends house. I saw the deer way ahead (very dark road, had my hi-beams on) so I slowed down, and sure enough, it bolted right across the road. Had I not saw her ahead of time, it could have gotten very ugly!
Every car owner with ABS brakes should go out on some quite road and try out the ABS system. Get going about 50 mph and slam the brakes to the floor and turn left to right and see how much control you really have. You will be surprised.
Deer and I don't get along at all. Hit one on the Cumberland River one late night in my boat, then barely missed getting nailed about a month later on my motorcycle. Glad it wasn't the other way-around.
That could have had a much worse ending. I recall years ago driving through Glacier Park, seeing a dead black bear on the side of the road that apparently was hit by a vehicle. Just imagine hitting a bear or moose.
Riding with my dad as a teenager, he hit a cow that had wandered
onto the highway. The cow rolled up on the hood of the '61 Falcon,
then rolled back down onto the highway. It ran up the bank, then
took a leak. Having never seen a cow urinate before, I thought it
had some grievous internal injury. We heard later that the cow had
no injury. We were fine. The Falcon had minor damage.
Within a year of that, I heard of a similar incident. But in this case,
a hoof came through the windshield, striking the driver in the face,
fatally injuring him.
Bottom line is, you never know what will happen striking a large animal.
Could be nothing. Could be fatal.
This is a good reason to keep the speed in check when unexpected things could happen (kids, deer, cars coming out of driveways, etc.) - (not saying in any way that the OP wasn't). Driving through Wyoming last year (near Yellowstone) I was enjoying the winding road when suddenly a large deer bolted from the side (he was standing near a fence, so I didn't notice him at first). It was a pretty close call.
I think they say running into a male moose is much more dangerous than a female moose - not because of the size, but because the males are tall enough that their bodies usually go right though the windshield. With the height of our Vettes, I'm guessing your average deer would pose the same problem.
Glad you didn't nail the deer, and that the Vette has such good brakes!
That is one thing that I wonder/worry about as I come to even a relatively slow stop, at least for the C6, is whether someone will be directly behind me.
I know the vast majority of vehicles behind me do not have anywhere near the braking capacity that the C6 does.
