5.5 or 6 quarts.
Good morning. I am gettng ready to do my first oil change. In the owners manual, it states 5.5 quarts of oil for the LS3 or 6.0 quarts of oil with the LS3 with extended oil cooling. I have the Z51 option. So does that mean I use the 6 quarts. Please advise. Thanks.

Hang on. Automatic or manual? There is a question whether the 08 has an oil cooler if it is an automatic. The manual for the 07 says the same thing yet the Z51 option for the automatics did NOT include an oil cooler. But some people say the LS3 added one under the radiator for all Z51s.
HOWEVER... I have an 07 Z51 A6 that should take 5.5 and it takes exactly 6.0 to hit the mark on the dip stick. I definitely do NOT have an oil cooler. There is no difference between my oil system and a non Z51 car. SO... Be prepared with 6 quarts and fill it until it runs a few minutes and the dip stick reads full. And if you don't want to be bothered with checking the oil level after doing the change ( ) putting in an extra pint won't hurt anything because 2 pints extra are recommended for track days.

I would think over filling ESPECIALLY on "track days" would be bad. The crank foams the oil if it is overfilled. I was always told better be a 1/2 qt under than a 1/2 over.

Racing or Other Competitive Driving
See your warranty book before using your
vehicle for racing or other competitive driving.
Notice: If you use your vehicle for racing or
other competitive driving, the engine may
use more oil than it would with normal use.
Low oil levels can damage the engine. For
information on how to add oil, see Engine Oil
on page 332.
Z06 Only: Be sure to check the oil level often
during racing or other competitive driving
and keep the level at or near the upper mark
that shows the proper operating range on
the engine oil dipstick.
Except Z06: Be sure to check the oil level
often during racing or other competitive driving
and keep the level at or near 1 quart (1 L)
above the upper mark that shows the proper
operating range on the engine oil dipstick.
After the competitive driving, remove excess
oil so that the level on the dipstick is not above
the upper mark that shows the proper
operating range.

Whether you have Z51 or not, you should just put in 6qts and call it a day, it won't harm a thing. There is a ton of leeway in the LSx series of engines, that little bit extra won't even come close to causing the crank to hit the oil.

1/2 a quart is not overfilling though, as I mentioned, it won't even come close to the point where the crank is touching the oil. You'd need to add about 2 extra quarts before that begins to happen. A measly 1/2 to 1 quart of oil isn't going to cause any problems whatsoever. I'd rather be one quart high than one quart low! (I've been running one quart over spec. in my C5 for 4 years now with zero problems, so I'm not just guessing here, it works)
