C6 Coupe roof panel noise primer - Long post
#121
Melting Slicks
I keep tightening the J hook (I think 4 turns now and getting less noise (it was quite loose from the factory). The front half of the top seams ok as far as noise. I think most of the noise is coming from the back of the roof.
I guess it can't hurt lubing the front latch areas. Any thing to lube in the back?
Thank you for all your input and detailed posts T90!

you have to be careful though - if the rear pins are bottoming out in their receivers, and you pull it too tight it will actually cause the rear of the top to warp upwards and pull away from the rubber...

The part number is in the TSB, but here it is:

GM Vehicle Care Super Lube® with PTFE
Approx. $17.00

When I had the roof handles replaced and everything lubed, the tech at the dealership used GM Super Lube, per the TSB. He was kind enough to give me the remainder of the tube. It is thick, and an excellent product for this use.

Superlube is the recommended (you can order it from any GM dealer or forum dealer like GMpartshouse.com). Any silicone based gasket lube would work as a substitute and honestly, you could use Vaseline as well but will likely need to reapply it more frequently.

Me too!
I just discovered that my vette has the same problem. Ever since I bought my C6 Coupe, the detachable roof panel has made creaking noises from time to time, but recently I heard louder than normal noises, and today when washing my car I discovered stress cracks in the exterior paint that run along the entire front edge (where it meets the windshield)
I heard that the roof panels were recalled and replaced. Has this happened to anyone else? also, is it true that the roof panel comes unpainted? My roof panel was warranty replaced when I first bought it because I discovered interior stress cracks, and I don't remember them having to send it out for paint.
thanks for your input.

GM will not replace handles
I have an '06 and finally took mine in to the dealership today as I too have had the creaking and popping noises. Armed with the printout of the post, the dealership indicated that TSB #08-08-67-013A has been superceded with 013B that indicates that they are NOT to replace the handles but only clean and lubricate. I argued the issue with them but they indicated that GM is now only allowing them to adhere to 013B.
Has anyone else had 013B and has this worked for them? Or are some of the suggestions on this thread proved to be more effective?
thanks.

I spent $7 on lube and it seems to have silenced my creaking and popping.
I was serioiusly concerned about this on my way home from buying the car. I didn't notice the noise during the test drive, but by the time I got home (50 miles) it had started.
I am guessing the gaskets had gotten dry while the car sat on the lot in the sun.
Anyway, huge huge thanks to Talon.

I will tell you that what ever they did seems to have worked, at least for now. I had the popping on the driver's side really bad and I haven't heard anything in the 5 days since I had it fixed. I guess time will tell.

My 2006 Coupe is in the shop now getting the work done. The dealer pulled up the TSB on their computers and have replaced the handles per TSB. They did not mention any 013B version.
I don't have the car back yet, but I just hope that cracking / popping that was right behind the driver side is gone!

For all the new folks posting here, with creeking tops. Take the car to the dealer and complain about the noise, one of two things will happen, he will lube the top and give it back to you of they will replace the lataches. If just the lube fixes the problem for you, it does for some folks, you are good to go. If the dealer just lubes it and it does not fix the problem return to the dealer and complain again then he will replace the latches and that will in 99% of the time fix the problem. If you are lucky your dealer will replace the latches the first time, mine did not so I had to take it back a second time.

I have an 06' with a transparent roof. I discovered what appears to be stress cracks along the perimeters and I phoned the dealer who said there is a TSA to replace the entire panel. Anyone else ever hear this?

Just started popping yesterday. Loud and annoying.
'09 coupe, transparent top, about 1400 miles. Darn. I'll try the fixes posted here and will also report this to GM as my car was built in August '08 (I thought the new handles were reported to prevent the popping).

On an August of 2009 built car, you have the newest design latch handles. I'd suggest that you re-lube the gasket and put a little lube in the receiver for the latch handles. Depending upon climate and roof panel use and storage the lube will need to be replaced with some frequency. It is a preventative maintenance item as recommended in the manual.
