When I first bought mine I was wondering why people were waving at me. Then I realized it was a "corvette thing". Now I wave to all of them. Not everyone waves back.
Back when I had a C4 it was interesting, other C1, C2, C3, and C4s would almost always wave back, C6s usually waved, but C5s seemed to have a grudge and rarely waved. My wife and I even started to joke about it, "oh, a C5"....
Now a couple years later it seems a few, no a lot of the C5 stuck ups are driving C6s. Well I have a C6 now and I'm almost embarassed about the C6 drivers. I guess to many the Corvette is not the dream I have always considered it and just a car to them.
Another thread just brought this front and center, the funny thing is they come on here and talk the talk but won't wave the wave...
Before you start saying that C5 drivers are stuck up look again at the C6 drivers. I own a C5 and C6 and wave to all but more times than not a C6 WILL not wave back so be careful how you talk about C5 drivers. Some of the C6 drivers are stuck up too. I know you would not post this in the C5 section.
I think that a lot of Vette drivers know about the wave thing. I also didn't know why people in other Vettes were waving at me. Soon I realized it was a VETTE thing and wave to all other Vettes. Oh by the way, I was a C5 driver and was jealous of the new C6 drivers, I still waved at them and now I have a new 09 Vert so I'm not jealous any more!!! The wave lives on!!!
I think many people are concentrating on driving or the million other things in their lives. About half the time I don't see other Corvettes until its too late or my wife asks if I saw the Corvette that just went by. If someone doesn't wave I spend no time assessing their motives, life is way too short for that. I wave and many times I get a wave back, that's good enough for me.
Motorcyclists very similiar. Harley rider versus import rider. Just keep waving, thumbs up. It will catch on. It's all good. May have caught them off guard too. Jamming out to their tunes or thinking..whatever...just keep giving the thumbs up.
It's a cultural thing and it's cool! Vettes are American and very sexy bad ***.
Sad...back in the 60s, 70s and 80s you would see ALL fellow owners wave. The few who might not were new owners that did not realize the tradition... but soon learned.
I wave when its safe, but especially in city traffic, I do miss some. I note that few C5s (or trashy-looking C4s) wave back. Most early Vettes (and good-looking C4s) and C6s wave back. The factory used to put a flyer in the glove box explaining the tradition ... I wish they still did.
Nobody ever waves at me. I live in Los Angeles and most people are self-centered and too busy looking to see if others are noticing them. Oh, I once had a woman in a C5 wave at me but we were in traffic going opposite directions and we were looking directly at each other.
I always wave, unless I'm busy driving and miss one. Sometimes they wave back, and I get happy Other times they don't, and I assume they are busy driving. Except for one guy I pass going the other way every day. He never waves. I haven't given up on him yet!
The C6 is my first Corvette. I quickly learned to 'save the wave.' I like the tradition and the feeling of fraternity. I get a decent return average here in Tucson...maybe 70% of all other Corvettes return or initiate the wave.
If another Corvette driver doesn't return the wave I don't worry about it...I figure that's their problem.
I hate missing a wave as well. A couple months back I barely glimpsed a C5 driver wave as he passed going in the opposite direction. I missed it...I was devastated. I almost turned around and gave chase just so I could return the wave.
I love the wave, but I am getting a hot rate of about 50%. No women have ever waved. I think that those that did not wave were just not paying attention. I kick myself when that happens to me!
Yea, when I drive my C5 I wave at everybody.. but when in the C6 I get my nose in the air.. NOT.. wave to everybody whether a C1 or a C6, and everything in between.. do occasionally miss giving/returning a wave but that is only in the case of where I see them to late to do so..

I live in the LA area. Trust me if I see you I will wave. But I do agree with your statement.
GM needs to put the wave in the owners manual so newbees will understand.
The wave is actually shared among a lot of vehicles. in 1979 I started driving a 66 Mustang and began noticing I got waves from other 60's Mustang Drivers. I thought that was cool and when I got into Vettes I was pleased to discover Vette drivers were usually pretty enthusiatic about waving. Now I have both a 66 Mustang and a C6 and get waves when I drive either one, although now when I drive the Mustang I get waves from drivers of all makes of classic cars, not just Mustangs. Still, I do notice only about 50% of the Vettes I pass by wave back. I think its a combination of not knowing about it and the drivers just being focused on getting somewhere. That's probably why I get more waves in my Mustang because most classic car drivers around here are enjoying the ride and scenerie so they notice another classic car when its coming their way. Save the wave!

Good Idea, or maybe when you buy a Vette the seller lets you know about the wave
