I'm responsible for bringing it back. The finish on my ignition button and inside driver door release button was badly worn so I did a search for advice. The forum has taught me an old dog can learn new tricks.
I haven't worked on my cars for years and have been more reluctant since they started referring to mechanics as technicians. The first repair I undertook was tightening my shaky rearview mirror. The instruction PDF said it is always scary the first time you remove the mirror and it was. I just completed my next job which was replacing the ignition and door release buttons. I'm sure a lot of you will get a chuckle out of this post but here are my new buttons installed. I got PM encouragement from Paul (Lv2tour) on both repairs.
I did mine by popping the knee bolster off on right side, then snapping the button back in place. 5 minute job.
This happened the only time my wife ever got behind the wheel of my Vette. She thought she had to push the button through the engine bay to start the car Needless to say she never touched the car ever since. There is a silver lining in any bad situation.
Thanks for the reply. If that picture on your thread is your wife I would be very forgiving. I have 7 yes 7 c6's and my wife says they
drive to stiff and semi's can't see you. So when I sell all these I won't
have to set the 2nd memory seat on the C7. I hope the C7 has a stiff ride.
Once you get it back in try not to push it very hard when starting. I think what is happening is some of us push to hard when starting it and hold it while starting which is a habit that comes from all our other cars where we had to hold the key in the start position till it started. I find the best way is to just touch it with enough force to toggle it forward just a bit then let go right away. The system will turn the starter without holding the toggle.
Thx. I have been holding mine too long when just a quick touch will do.
Using a pry tool or a butter knife you need to release the bottom of the pod surround
Once you pop off both sides just reach in and press the switch back in
Well, here we are over 9 years since this post, and it's still very useful for we novices. I did manage to get the starter button back in place. But here is my problem: As others have commented on, the retainer clip (see photo) fell out when I pried open the panel. I believe it goes where I placed in in the 3rd photo, but I cannot figure out how to put it into the holder next to the start button. Does anyone have a good method for doing that? Or maybe it doesn't even go there.
It does go right where your orange X is but I think GM added this part in later production runs. Your car may not have come with it. I do not know if it is a separate piece or whether a new switch would need be purchased.
I just took mine out yesterday and here is that retaining clip:
