On the flip side, I've noticed that people in front of me slow WAAAY down when I come up on them. I had a guy in a pickup pull out on me (dontcha hate it when there's exactly ZERO people behind you and someone can't wait 5 freakin' seconds??) and then do 15-20 UNDER the limit for about a mile until I could turn off the main road into my family's neighborhood, getting on and off his brakes the entire way. Is my M2W that loud? Are my HID's that bright? Or, are people just that much of a bunch of a-holes?
I see this more often than Tailgaters and it is very annoying. I wouldn't do this to anyone. I have no idea about what their goal is but I do mess with them by driving far left and then far right behind them-they respond by moving left or right. I have them moving all over the place (I saw this on an english TV showing how those white vans get around slow cars)
I installed in my third brake light one of those flashers that strobes a few times and the goes solid and will not strobe again until you have been off the brakes for x amount of time. It has helped some of the tailgating. Most of the time if they are that close on my rear they are not tailgating but drafting.
I've been rear ended 3 times over the years.. Last one, some guy in a van did $10K worth of damage to my '00 Honda S2000! Worst part, State Farm didn't want to total it! It was in the shop for 2.5 months(rental car coverage was for 30 days only)... A year later I got rid of it, it was never the same again.
What I've done in the past... if someone is on my Azz and I'm in the right lane doing 60 mph... and he don't pass but just hangs in behind me, I'll drive in the left side of the lane, and SLOWLY let the car drift to the right , until the right wheels are almost to the shoulder, then ABRUPTLY over-correct to get back in my lane.. after I do this 2 or 3 times they (The Tailgaters) think I'm drunk or high and BACK WAYYYY off ....
It's also reasonable to ask if you are driving too slow for conditions.
If somebody's tailgaiting you, let 'em by.
It is reasonable to ask. I also agree, it's better to have the tailgater in front of you than behind for sure! But dontcha just love it when they pass you and then they slow down? What's with that??
It happens. It's part of that, "you're not so fast in your Corvette" mentality. I usually pull over and let them pass. That really shows them who's boss.
In case you haven't noticed....All Corvettes come with a peddle on the right side of the floor that makes "tailgaters" dissappear....
Very good point. I have no prob with TG's and we have millions of people out here. I have noticed however that people like to get close to the Vette to get a good look at it.

I put up with NO tailgating: I'll keep jabbing the brakes untill the person backs off; works every time.
One time I tried to mix things up a bit; Pushed the clutch in, wound the engine right up, and laid a good 20 feet of rubber in front of an *** who was riding my bumper on the right lane even though the left lane was empty. It felt very unsafe so I haven't tried it again since, but he backed off RIGHT AWAY
As a state LEO I usually ignore idiots while driving my vette. However there are exceptions and "TAILGATING" is one of them. I have stopped gross offenders and read them the riot act or issued a citation!
It's rather enjoyable to watch the morons face when he realizes he was tailgating a state cop! Can't save the world but I usually try and do something about tailgaters!!
It's stupid, dangerous, annoying and extremely rude! One quick stop and you have thousands of dollars worth of damage because of some moron!
That happened to me one morning driving to Washington, D.C. I am driving to work and this guy is tailgating me. The idiot then started driving aggressively. I would change lanes to get away from him. He would change lanes and follow me. Fortunately, I am also a law enforcement officer. I radioed ahead and there were four police cars waiting for him. I wished I had a camera to take his picture when he discovered that the one he was tailgating is writing him a ticket. The only thing that I can say is get on the cell and call 911.
I don't let anyone push me. I'll either maintain speed or slow down slightly. If they want to pass then they'll go around. It is amazing how many people discover the go pedal when you pass them.
If anyone wishes to see some real bad tailgating, just come on out here to S. Calif...there's very few who are running below 70mph, most averaging 75 on the busy and numerous freeways here. Tailgating is a way of life. No, I don't do it, but you also can't leave too much space between otherwise someone will jam themselves in front of you, just so they can be one more car length in front of anyone else. This doesn't include the idiots that change lanes abruptly from the #1 lane across 4 lanes of high speed cars and hits the offramp just in the last second. Sounds like people here don't know how to drive, but truthfully, many are very good drivers. We sort of have to be to survive here on the freeways. Most all freeways are 3-6 lanes each way and never a shortage of cars. When someone just has to get past me, I end up moving out of the way and let them tailgate the person who was in front of me. Adding a hair more.. just wait till you're here and a crowd of motorcycles comes along riding wheelies down the freeway at 60 and 70 mph!

You just described Philly area driving......without the 5 friggin lanes and motorcycles.

Good point...Colorado now has a "Keep right except to pass law".....Many people love to "lollygag" in the left lane...Not that it justifies tailgating, but two wrongs dont make a right...I realize many states dont have a "Keep right except to pass" law..but common sense should tell you to do it

I wish I wasn't the only one on the road who realizes that
You can go to your state attorney's office and direct file a complaint on the vehicle that is tailgating. You will be listed as the witness and will need to testify. That is if they are willing to allow you to direct file the citation. Really not very likely as they will want to use their resources for more serious crimes. But if you have a real scoff law bothering you you can try.
it seems with me anyway, that the vette attracts tailgaters wanting to get a reaction, race or whatever...I agree, they have always been there...just notice them more I guess...
