I bought my 08 Coupe from Kerbeck last May in-person. They were the lowest priced on Corvettes and the most straightforward car dealer I had ever dealt with. And while dealers around me (I'm 1h.20m. north of Kerbeck) had 3 or 4 cars to choose from (many > $65K list), Kerbeck had at least 100 cars on the lot - and exactly what I was looking for. I think a lot of a person's experience with a dealer has to to with the approach first used. Attitude is often dealt with similar attitude.
My one Kerbeck experience was enough for me. Bought a Coupe there last summer that was covered in some type of "debris" embedded in the paint. Made the 4 hour drive back to Kerbeck and checked the other cars on their lot and found a number of them with the same "debris" in the paint. They clayed the car and buffed it into a huge mess trying to remove it. They were able to remove most of it but the mess they made of it in the process was unacceptable. I told them I wanted another car and they wouldn't even talk about it. They went so far as to tell me they wouldn't even take the car as a trade because they wouldn't want to to sell it. There's a lot more to the story that I'm not going to get in to. Needless to say go over the paint IN THE DIRECT SUN with a magnifying glass if neccesary before you sign any paperwork.
Three years ago I wanted to buy a new C6 from Kerbeck. To make a long story short, I bought it from a different dealer.
They acted like I needed them, and they didn't need me.
I went about a year ago, I got a better deal from a small dealership that had allocation for 1 Corvette. You just have to shop around. Harry was very helpful though, he is one of a kind.
Another dealer at Kerbeck didn't want to budge, I kind of know the feeling.
I don't blame them for not wanting to talk trades over the phone. While I'm sure you are honest many are not. Once a price is thrown out there the customer expects that price even if when the car arrives it is not what it was claimed to be.
I did my deal with Kerbeck over the phone but I had no trade. Everything was done before I arrived and all I had to do was sign some papers, get the tour of the car and I was out within an hour. Oh, and they had every color in the options I wanted and it was the best deal by far from anyone else I spoke with. I was totally satisfied with my Kerbeck experience and would buy from them again.
I'm sure every large dealer has some people who are not happy with them. The old saying "you can't please everyone all the time" comes to mind. Luckily there are many large Corvette dealers to chose from if you are not happy with one dealer.
I just tried to buy a car from Kerbeck but to no avail. I wanted a rough price quote for two Corvette trades and if they were not as I described Kerbeck could refuse to take them. No dice. I live in DC and they wanted me to drive the cars all the way to NJ, I thought this unreasonable. The first guy had a Britsh accent and was more interested in telling me how much he knew and his experience in the business instead of listening. The second guy was the sales manager and he was not much better. I will admit I have little simpathy for car salesmen, having been lied to and ripped off many times so I am a little short with them. However, I am a real customer with money in hand but I guess in this market they are making money hand over fist and can do things their way. I will look local for my Z06.

People describe things in many different ways. I looked at cars that were described as pristine, not a scratch, showroom condition, etc only to discover the car was a POS.
Not saying your car is in this category but they really need to see it first. Just sell the cars locally yourself and remove the trade in issue altogether.

With so many "bad" dealerships out there, you really want the "good" ones to remain that way too. Guess it's tough if not really impossible to give a trade price, sight unseen over the phone. I had asked them the same thing about 8 month's ago (I guess) and Dave told me up front that they'd rather do a straight sale because they couldn't assess the value of it properly over the phone, due to me being "out of state". I guess it would be easier working a deal without trading.

It's actually done all the time with high end cars....I've done it many times myself without a seconds hesitation on the dealers part.
The key is to take detailed pics of your car and be brutally honest in your description.
Worked fine for me when I bought my C6. They took my trade sight unseen and I gave them my VIN and described my trade down to the scratch. Sent them lots and lots of pix.
All they had to do is take it for a test drive when I got to the dealer to pick up the C6.
I told them I wanted an internet deal and no bullshi# games of waiting in the showroom while the sales mgr looked at the auction sheets and laughed at me.

Before I bought my Vette I was shopping for a GXP. Every Pontiac dealer I emailed/called requested my VIN and gave me a quote. When I was started looking for Vette's, again, every dealer I called asked for my VIN and gave me a quote. Obviously the quotes were conditional, that goes without saying...but my point is not one dealer refused to give me a quote sight unseen.
I think the only reason a dealer wouldn't provide a quote sight unseen is because it puts the buyer in control, and they may not like that. I prefer to deal with those that don't mind if I'm in control of how and where I spend my money.
I will not ever even call Kerbek again... this past Sept (just before the prices tanked) Kerbek had an 05 listed for $34000 it had 31,000 miles on it & was LMB (what I wanted) I saw the photos of it on the INTERNET.. it (DID NOT HAVE Z51, no drilled rotors)
I called and spoke to a sales man.. told him I have NO trade, was paying in full (bank check) ... then I told him I was in Westchester NY about a 5 hr drive, and asked if he would work with me on the price if I came down THAT day? I said the miles 31,000 seemed a little high for an 05 but it was ok if they (Kerbek) would work with me on the price..
I was politely told NO! the price you see is the price you pay, and save yourself a long drive...
OK so I start looking on the internet, and see another 05 LMB with only 6,000 miles Z51 and EVERY other option = to 3LS now..
This car was at Prestige Motors in Northern NJ... asking price was $35,000 I called and asked the same question "Would they work with me on the price" ?? The salesman said "Sure common down, & we'll talk..
I was at Prestige in 45 min.... and one hr later signed the paperwork for a 6,000 mile car I paid $32,000 !!
This is $2000 LESS than Kerbek was asking for a car with 31,000 miles and fewer options!!
Can anyone give me ONE reason I should even "TRY" dealing with Kerbek in the future.. I plan on an 09 or 2010 soon I "Hope"
They know that if you go thru all the trouble of bringing the cars in for appraisal.. that they will have the advantage of making a deal since you went thru all the time and trouble, you will feel more compelled to take a lesser deal to be done with it..
I seriously hope they don't pull stuff like that . And they should have been more understanding of the distance involved...would they drive a Z06 to DC for you to evaluate it?
i was 24 when I bought my first vette from Kerbeck..........and they were the only dealer to "work" with a kid. I went to 4 local dealers and was laughed at. I drove 3 hours in bumper to bumper shore traffic on a Friday night.
Although I wasn't able to test drive one, they were still very helpful
My buying experience at Kerbeck was very satisfactory to me. They called back promptly; everything done via intenet, fax, and FedEx. During the whole transaction I felt I was being treated in a very professional manner.
They handled my out of state registration and even sent me a refund when I wasn't even expecting it.
I would not hesitate to do business with them again.
I bought my vette from Kerbecks and it was the worst experience ever. The customer service after the sale was much worse than that. Would NOT recommend them to anyone I know looking for a vette or any other car.
It's certainly understandable that they would not want to sign any contracts or make any guarantees on the trade-in price without seeing the trade. However, there is no reason they could not make promises based on your description of the vehicle (including pictures) that is tentative based on the trade being as you represented it.
It's difficult for some salespersons to work this way. They are trained to do their best to talk you into coming down to the dealership where they feel they have the advantage. They want to get you into one of those cramped little cubicles so they can line up the sales staff to come wear you down or attempt to confuse you into making a deal that is heavily stacked in their favor.
Trading in a car is a extremely bad deal for the customer and should be avoided at all cost. Sell your car privately and then go new car shopping. I know that a lot of people cannot afford to buy another car without first selling their old one and it can be a real hassle. However, it's the smart way to go. Let's face it, first you bought your "old" car and ate a huge depreciation when you drove it off the lot. Then a couple years later you walk back into the dealer to buy another new car and you let them have your old one for less than what it is worth so they can turn around and sell it for what it's worth and make the profit.
I guess Kerbeck is no longer a forum sponsor or the mods are on vacation. Normally a thread like this would be locked down/moved pretty quickly....

Take a drive out to Country Chevrolet in Warrenton, VA (about an hour from DC). They've got a couple of Z's on the lot - new and used. The GM's name is Jake. I've bought two vettes there and have been quite happy.
