if they seemed interested id tell them its ok to look at it.. if they were more interested id let them sit in it... they could be potential owners how do you think you got the bug? i got mine from my uncle letting me see it! and he helped build them in the 70s...
I walked out of a restaurant today and I see a couple leaned over looking into my C6's windows. I was alarmed at first but calmed myself and asked them if I could help them. They were a little embarrassed but said "nice car" and walked away. My instinct was to yell get the F away from my car! But I didnt want to add to the snobby Corvette owner perception. How do you handle incidents like these?
I would have walked up to them and said something like, 'nice car huh?'. If they were obviously admiring your car and not touching it I would feel pretty good.
If they are just checking it out, I would just say how you doing. If they struck up a conversation or asked some questions fine. Otherwise I would say take it easy, fire it up and be on my way. Most of us spend time talking on the forum about cleaning the car, modding it, etc. I would guess most of us want people to admire our car as much as we do, not always the case but nice when it happens. So why react any other way when people are doing no harm and in reality what you want.
If I see a nice Vette parked someplace, I walk over and check it out. Many people do. I see nothing unusual about that.
Last week I drove my vert over to a local high school to use their running track during the morning. It was a really nice day, so I had the top down. My timing was a little off arriving, so a PE class came to the track during my run. There must have been 50 teenagers that had to walk past my car to get to the track. I continued my run, but kept a watchful eye on the group. Almost every one of them stopped to look at my car, inside and out. They were repectful of my property. We don't give kids enough credit sometimes.

Quite often there is someone checking out my Vette looking in the windows. I usually open the door so they can get a better look and answer any questions they have. Sometimes I let them sit behind the wheel to get a better feel. They are always appreciative and I take their interest as a compliment.
As long as they aren't doing stupid to the car, I just walk right up and say hi. I'm always polite and friendly, trying to create some goodwill and healthy appreciation for Corvettes. I have let some folks, kids included, sit inside. That usually seals the deal in making another convert!
Always happy to answer questions and chat, as long as it's not some wise azz acting like an idiot.
Peoples' perception of Corvettes and their drivers can always use some positive reinforcement

Just depends on who it is. If their just admiring my vette (I can't blame them), had enough manners not to touch it, and giving me a compliment, I would carry on a normal conversation with them. However, if they were all over it and starting to touch it while peering in, well then, that would unleash the vette police within me.
x2 If they like my car, then I'll tell 'em all the information they need to know. Hell, I might even take them for a spin. I figure that the more people experience our cars, the more Vette lovers there will be... And that's not a bad thing!

I frequently see people looking at my ride, and I have no problem with it at all. It usually strikes up a nice conversation. Most people, like the people in this post, respect both the car and their owners. Don’t touch, don’t lean on or reach inside. It’s that simple. However, if I see someone leaning on it or using it as a chair, then I’m going to remove them by their neck!
if you don't want people to notice your car maybe you should drive a volvo. it up tight owners like you that give the perception that corvette owners are arrogant *******s( from what i've read here over the years they're right. for gods sake relax people it's a car why shouldn't people admire your car? you do i think i'll finish venting about some of the total **** retentives on this board like the guy who was upset because he brought his car in for service and there was 2 miles more on the odometer i sure most people including the service guys don't stay up late dreaming of ways to trick you into taking your car for a ride. well the sun came out so i guess i'll take the z06 out so people can stare at it ( the bastards) and plot how to get the fob away from me
From: NJ..."the way I saw it, everyone takes a beating sometimes."
I have two stories. One involving my C6 and the other involving an *** in an Audi R8.
I was parked way out at the back of the lot at a local Target. I come out and see 4-5 kids (12-14yrs) running back and forth from my car. Since I was too far away to see exactly what was going on, I just hit the panic button. Well "panic" is exactly what they did. They screeched in that high pitched prepubescent voice and started running away. They were actually running right towards me. As they got closer I put my arms out to stop them and said, "Whoa. What's going on here?" They nervously stuttered, "We were just looking and taking pictures. We didn't touch it." I laughed and told them it's ok. I was actually going to ask them if they wanted to take more pictures but they scurried away. No harm, no foul. Just kids admiring GM's work. I've been complimented many times and have even seen people pose next to my car for pics at car shows.
My second story has me on the other end of this scenario. I was coming out of the mall and notice an Audi R8 parked on the lot. This was before a lot of them were even released yet. I walk over to it and lean over the back to look at the engine. It is in the rear with a plexiglass window for those who didn't know. I never touched the car and even made a point to hold my jacket so as the zipper wouldn't rub against the car as I leaned over. Suddenly the lights blink and I hear, "Touch it and I'll kill you." I turn and see a gentelman and lady, mid 40s, walking towards the car. Giving him the benefit of the doubt that he was joking,(i'd love to see him try it) I laughed and said nice car. He walks right passed me without even acknowledging me and gets into the car. What a f*cking ***. I so badly wanted to follow him onto the highway and deflate his ego with my C6. As he was pulling out I noticed dealer plates on the car. So it probably wasn't even his car.
So I agree that the situation should dictate your reaction. Just look at the Audi guy. Would you want people to get that impression of you if it's not justified?

If I notice it and I'm in range, I play with the FOB. I maintain equanimity. The "general" population appreciates our vehicles.
I was at Grossmont Shopping Center in La Mesa last month and noticed two guys standing by my C6, looking at it. I walked up to them and said . . . "Is it locked?" They looked at each other and shrugged.
As I reached down and opened the door I looked back and said, "You guys never saw this.", and drove off. Like I stole it.
Last year I took my vette to my clubs first meet...I was parked next to a 90 or 91 vette. Older couple driving it. They obviously had friends in my club that kept coming over to speak to them. It was at this time that the older woman leaned on my car with jeans on. I could see the rivet right on my paint. I walked over and said "excuse me, could you please not lean on my car?" Instead of saying "sorry, I didn't realize" she decided to get in my face and tell me "it's just a car" I said "get off my car you have rivets that will scratch the paint!". I now no longer take my car to shows or anywhere else where I won't be watching it.
I know it is just a car but people are so freaking thought-less it makes me want to scream!
