Here in Ontario you would have watched your car get towed and impounded for 1 week costing you around $1000-1500 which is unrecoverable, lost your license for 1 week, and once you make it to court you would have faced a fine of ranging from $2000-10000.
what rags me about speeding tickets is it is just a way for the state or commonwealth to pad their pockets. i routinely drive a road that is posted at 55mph. this is the same road that has had nothing done to it except resurfacing of the pavement for the last 40 years. same two lanes, same curves, same hills and so on. 40 years ago the posted limit was 65 mph. now if you run 65mph you get a ticket. most roads in this country are posted at least 10 mph under what they are safely capable of handling; therefore speeding revenue for the state
I see that you're most likely in Canada and it's in KPH rather than MPH here in the U.S. However, I can tell you, most violators that I clock going more than 30 over the speed limit where I work gets the full amount. . . no breaks. If you're that much over the limit, in my opinion, you NEED the full amount. I know your circumstances were "different" but I try to do what I feel is most necessary to correct the driving behavior. If you take some sort of driving school, sometimes that will defer your suspension of the license. Just a little opinion from a law enforcement officer's point of view.
Good Luck with your endeavor!!
Thanks... I was kind of hoping to get some feedback from enforcement.
I don't know the laws pertaining to radar detectors in Alberta but I'll say it again that ours in the vette and the wife's Murano have paid for themselves many times over.
Well I paid "Tickets, The Traffic Ticket people" to fight the ticket for me and it worked! They use retired police to take the cases and they let me keep my license and got the fine reduced. Wheeeew! I would have been screwed if I lost that baby!

According to you, the speed limit was 70 km/hr and you were clocked at 127 km/hr! The officer was being nice.
Don't understand this comment. The speed limit was about 42 mph and our man was clocked at less that 78 mph. Given how fast a Corvette can accelerate and also de-accelerate these speeds are not unreasonable if the road ahead was clear, no intersections etc. How was the police officer being nice? With a good driving record and an understanding of all the circumstances, doesn't seem like you should be hammered to the extreme. If you could talk to the judge perhaps you could do a good job of explaining there was nothing dangerous. I kinda think a lawyer would be a good idea. How much would it cost? A few hundred dollars would probably be a good investment.

I used to live in Australia. At that time, I understood that being caught driving above 140 km/hr was a big problem. I think you got a night in jail (goal in Australian spelling). So on remote two lane desert roads, usually straight as a yardstick and with almost no traffic, I always kept my speed a couple of ticks below 140 km/hr. Once I approached a slower moving car, and passed it (in Australian, I overtook it) at about 125 km/hr (having slowed down from my near 140 km/hr/). As I went by, I had a sinking feeling as I saw the police logo on the side of the door. Sure enough, the red, blinking lights came on. The police officer and I had a conversation. Actually, his concern was that with my American accent I didn't understand the latent dangers of high speed driving on the two lane desert roads. Anyhow, an explanation that I had lived in Australia for many years, all that time living in the outback driving on desert roads, etc, he let me go. A real gentleman.

I am a lawyer in Alberta. I dont do alot of traffic as it is not worth most peoples time to higher a lawyer but in your case i recommend retaining the services of one. A lawyer with a good relationship with the traffic crowns (not lawyers but almost all ex cops) should be able to get you down to 49km over. This way you will keep your license.
Any lawyer that doesn't know the difference between "higher" and "hire" shouldn't be "hired". (Pulp Fiction) English, do you speak it (M/F)!
Even simple DUI's here in the states are allowed to drive to work if its their first offense... sure the DUI was a crime, but having the guy lose his livelihood and job is unfair punishment.
I'd be willing to bet that if your license is suspended, you can probably get it allowed to at least drive to work.
And if not, well, just drive careful the next 30 days!
Good luck, and get a lawyer.
Be glad it wasn't here in Calif...DUI is nothing. Get caught without insurance and you lose your license for up to three years, mandatory one year. The only exception to the driving was if driving was required for your job, but not getting back and forth to work. Happened to me when my insurance company went out of business and I didn't know it, plus was rear-ended at an intersection while I was stopped.

Yeah well big deal, in France, the last time study was undertaken, 97% of the people driving without insurance didn't have a driver license neither (driver's license is required to get insurance).
So, as a French cop put it: what are you going to suspend as there is nothing to suspend?
