I guess all judges were, at one time, a lawyer. So if you show up without one of his bro's, he's going to hammer you with 100% fines and penalties. But, if you pay (off) one of his own, and show up with a bro-lawyer, he's going to lessen the fine and penalty? Sounds like legal extortion to me.
Don't get me wrong. There are times when you definitely need legal assistance. But, I just don't understand why simple traffic transgressions require one. Guess the lawyer then contributes to the judges favorite charity?
Locally, there is a judge that will waive the fine and penatlty on your first two offenses.......... if you go to traffic school each time.
The traffic school costs $150 per session. It is a privately run school................. and owned by this, and two other judges !
And we wonder why things are so screwed up in this country???
Don't understand this comment. The speed limit was about 42 mph and our man was clocked at less that 78 mph. Given how fast a Corvette can accelerate and also de-accelerate these speeds are not unreasonable if the road ahead was clear, no intersections etc. How was the police officer being nice? With a good driving record and an understanding of all the circumstances, doesn't seem like you should be hammered to the extreme. If you could talk to the judge perhaps you could do a good job of explaining there was nothing dangerous. I kinda think a lawyer would be a good idea. How much would it cost? A few hundred dollars would probably be a good investment.

I used to live in Australia. At that time, I understood that being caught driving above 140 km/hr was a big problem. I think you got a night in jail (goal in Australian spelling). So on remote two lane desert roads, usually straight as a yardstick and with almost no traffic, I always kept my speed a couple of ticks below 140 km/hr. Once I approached a slower moving car, and passed it (in Australian, I overtook it) at about 125 km/hr (having slowed down from my near 140 km/hr/). As I went by, I had a sinking feeling as I saw the police logo on the side of the door. Sure enough, the red, blinking lights came on. The police officer and I had a conversation. Actually, his concern was that with my American accent I didn't understand the latent dangers of high speed driving on the two lane desert roads. Anyhow, an explanation that I had lived in Australia for many years, all that time living in the outback driving on desert roads, etc, he let me go. A real gentleman.
I don't know that he was necessarily being nice, but the OP was going almost twice the legal speed limit. Whether the car accelerates or breaks at a fast pace has no bearing on the issue. The limit was set and he was well over it.
Watch the speed trap in Tifton Ga. on I-75. Do what ever the minimum speed is in your vette or you will get it! I think minimum is 40 mph. That is the only way you will be safe.
