From out of no where comes the infamous shredded truck tire on the highway... I hit it at about 50 getting on. The loudest smack Ive heard in long time. Sweating bullets that I have damage I pulled into the first lit gas station I saw.
Fortunately only rubber scuffs in the front on the lower bumper no marks on the any of the side panels...whew!
But my rocker panel underneath is shredded and a chunk is missing! Luckily you cant see it unless your under the car. But I know its there and its gonna drive me nuts
Ive never hit one before and go figure, put me in a fiberglass auto and I find it out of all 5 lanes
Those stupid alligators. (A member from St Louis actually came up with that nickname) I heard the rocker panels are a pain in the butt to replace so good luck with that one. I would put it up on a lift to make sure it didn't do any more damage and check the wheels real good.
I had my car a total of 1 week and managed to drive over a cone someone else had knocked into my lane. Came over a hill and there it was. With traffic in the next lane I had no where to turn. Made an awful THUMP, but luckily no damage found.
A friend lost a front quarter panel when he hit one and his friend behind had to have the front fascia, hood and roof repainted, when it bounced off the first Vete into the second....

its been under "investigation" a long long time.....too long. underinflation, and miss matched duals are culprit. Does not mater if its a retread or new tire..........
Good thing you didn't lose anything big. I had an ENTIRE TIRE (no pun intended) hit me at 4 in the morning, when I was in my Camaro SS. You don't really expect to see a tire rolling at you on the highway when you're doing 70mph. I had little to no time to react. I did my best and it hit me on the right headlight. Took out most of the front bumper, headlight. Luckily the Camaro is mostly steel I walked away just fine, but needless to say, the car needed a little body work.
I was driving a loaner car while my BMW M3 was in the shop awhile ago... It was dark, and I was in the process of changing lanes.... Out of nowhere there is a CONCRETE BLOCK in the middle of 2 lanes and I ran it right over with the passenger side (front and rear) tires . The sound and feeling was unreal, the whole car shook. The car was immediatly crippled, I barely made it onto the shoulder to find I had destroyed both rims and both tires on the loaner BMW Z4 I was driving.
That I didnt wreck the whole car was a blessing. Only damage was to 2 wheels and tires, and to my ego...
What really gets me is the trucks that have crappy mud guards that kick up stones that crack windshields. It is a real pain in the butt to get a new windshield on a C6 fixed right.
I just ran over one yesterday at 75 mph. I couldn't swerve because of traffic, so I just centered the car and drove right over it. It did hit with a loud thump. I haven't looked under the car yet, but I think I got out of this one with little or no damage.
Then, on the way home last night, there's a deer standing broadside right in my lane. Same highway, same 75 mph. Luckily, this time, there was no traffic and I was able to swerve into the left lane and drive around it. I have to admit, these headlights are better than I had originally thought. They light up every reflector and every sign for quite a distance. I was able to spot the deer in enough time to take evasive action because of the headlights.
Just picked up my new 08 this Saturday - driving home from SC to MN came around a corner and there was a small muffler in the middle of my lane. Just straddled it the best I could, heard a small impact - pulled over and no damage at all! I was extremely lucky that the muffler was off of some tiny honda or something.
Of course there would be something like that in the road on your first drive in a new car!
The 'gators' and other road debris drive me nuts also. I drove my '84 to Bloomington Gold to be a part of the Special Collection this June and fortunately was able to miss all of what was out there, and there were definitely opportunities for damage! The C6 is even worse due to the low ground clearance on the front air dam, and my annual trek to Road America in a few weeks will also need to be one with caution for the same things. I always stay over the night following the race, not wishing to be challenged by deer and raccoons on 94 which would involve several hours of night driving. I've been fortunate over the years, so if I eventually do hit something the odds have been beaten so long that I really shouldn't complain.
I got hit by one once in the beemer I had. It sux....
I noticed there are some rocker panels on Fleabay for $139 if you want to replace it. Not sure what the price is new. Just FYI, noticed them on there. David
