close up pics of damaged area would aid in a diagnosis. if it truly is "chipped" then a buffer won't fix it. look at drcolorchip .com or have a pro touch it up.
oh, and may the people that did this burn in hell.
Providing it is truly scratched and not chipped all the way through the paint, go to your local body shop supply store and get these three 3M polishing compounds. Start with the middle one and go up to the most abrasive one on the left only if you have to. Get the special pads for each (here's hoping you have a random orbital buffer??). Work on the spot carefully -- if anything is going to take them out and smooth the area, these are what you need:
No need to post a pic - from your description alone you have the "classic" damage from being egged. Only choices are to 1) Live with it 2) Have it repaired correctly which mean repainting the panel 3) Do a cheapo repair with touch-up paint of some sort. I know which one would be my choice.

This won't help - the paint is gone. Anyone who's ever been egged (yup, happened to me a long time ago in high school) knows the paint is removed. VERY characteristic appearance.

The egg shells scratch a rough circular band where they hit and shatter. Usually goes well into the clearcoat.
The egg washes off but I doubt the "ring of saturn" can be polished off.
It's black, your only choice is a repaint of the trunk lid. Probably not a difficult or expensive job.
Take the car to a good body shop. It is possible if the indentation is only in the clear coat they can save the paint. Sometimes the indentation is not as deep as we fear and the shop can sand it out and then buff the panel. If that is not an option then you will just have to have the clear resprayed. Good Luck hope it is the least intrusive job.
I came out of a friends house one night to find my vette egged...I was pissed. A piece of egg shell got stuck inside the inner door panel where the window slides up, and scratched a big line into my tint.
