I don't know that. Explain it to me since the FOB is mostly passive and is never "on" except when someone is pushing a button.
The automatic locking feature works as follows:
Last door closes.
BCM checks for FOB inside car by sending a challenge/response to the FOB.
If found (FOB responds from inside), honk horn three times and quits.
If not found (no FOB responds or FOB outside responds), start short timer.
When timer times out lock doors.
You have to "hide" the FOB inside the car where the antennas can't see it for the autolock to lock the FOB inside. The solution is to not "hide" the FOB inside the car. The easiest way to do that is to take it with you as you would a regular set of keys if you didn't want the car stolen. The second is to turn off the autolock and then remember to lock the car every time.
The FOB is not transmitting all the time. It only powers up when you push a button or close the doors and then only for a fraction of a second. That's how a button cell battery can last for years and still power a radio transmitter than can reach out hundreds of feet when you push the button to pop the hatch.
Honestly, I just don't get the fascination with the autolock feature. Its not as if its something that people have become comfortable with because all cars have it. Almost no cars have it. For me its just easier to do what I have done with every other car I have ever owned and lock the car myself when I want it locked.
I agree for the most part. I like the keyless ignition and I think autolock is a great feature for those who want to use it but like you, I prefer to lock the car myself. For the Corvette I always carry the fob (with the car key and a house key) in my left front pocket. I don't have any problem remembering to lock the car when I want it locked. Old habits and all....

Not necessarily. This is a odd occurrence but when I'm using my TPMS tool to reset the tire pressure sensors and the car's in learn mode, if I leave the fob on the console and the drivers door open there's no problem. If, however, I shut the car door while I'm going from wheel to wheel setting the TPS's, learn mode shuts-off and the car doors lock. I have the autolock feature disabled but under these circumstances my car locks itself anyway. I know others have tried to replicate this scenario without success so maybe it only happens with 2005 models or maybe just with my car. It's an odd quirk but it is possible for the car to lock itself without the autolock feature enabled.
