I Have 2005 C6. I am getting a CHECK GAS CAP ERROR. I have replaced the gas cap and unplugged the battery to reset the computer but still no luck!

Make sure you are not applying any pressure when turning the gas cap, and don't go past two or three clicks.

put a little silicone grease around the lip of the cap and filler neck and that will solve your problem for at least a year. then repeat.

I dealt with this last week on my 2005. I was told do not over tighten and three clicks max when tightening the cap. I was then told in a day or two the message would dissappear. I also was sent a new cap from a dealer through warranty. Before the cap arrived I drove the car for two days and poof, message all gone.

Hello,

Here is some information that might help you with your situation:

3-54 Owners Manual

CHECK GAS CAP: If the gas cap has not been fully
tightened, this message will appear. You should
check your gas cap to ensure that it is on properly.
Once tightened, it will take at least one overnight park
to reset or clear this message. If there is a CHECK GAS
CAP message and a malfunction indicator lamp on in
the instrument panel cluster, you may need to see your
GM dealer for service. See Malfunction Indicator
Lamp on page 3-41 for more information.

A mouse got in the engine compartment and chewed a hole in the evap return line. A smoke test will locate it.

The warranty on the 2005 gas cap has been extended to 10 years or 120,000 miles. They will give you a new one.

It's interesting to read different owners and how they tighten their caps. The warranty letter states not to press down on it. Some members say not to tighten more than a few clicks. I can turn mine around and around many times and it still seals. I've never had a check gas cap light.

Same thing happened to me on 2005 when it was one year old. Took it to dealership under warranty and they put a new cap on.

When I once experienced a 'check gas cap' warning a forum member suggested I try screwing the cap on as loosely as possible. The cap is still 'on' just don't try to screw it down tight like you would with gas caps on other vehicles. I followed his advice and never had another warning.

I have an '09 Pontiac G8 GT, and gas caps have been a point of trouble on these cars for some people also (I haven't had any problem). Many have been replaced under warranty. I wonder if GM has changed the OEM source for this part ?

BINGO! So many people think that disconnecting the battery will reset codes. WRONG! That's why the codes are there - so things can go wrong and correct themselves but a record is kept for the technician to find. If codes disappeared every time the battery went dead there could be many things wrong that would never be caught.

This isn't a Windows or Mac computer. Turning off the power doesn't "reboot" it. Disconnecting the battery MAY reset volatile errors and settings like the window indexing or a lock up of the CD player but there is also non-volatile memory just like the hard disc on your computer is non-volatile. Codes are in non-volatile memory. Some are reset when the problem goes away for a while (like the gas cap message) and some never go away until they are reset with a code reader.

I had mine replaced on my 05. The new one is worse than the original. It barely seats itself and can easily rattle off. I found it off the filler neck when I went to get gas the other day. The replacement is a POS. I'll be back for another POS.
