You can be friendly too. Next time, have your passenger wave to him before you get pulled over.

I'm not trying to claim a side, but I didn't violate any law.

Please don't make any unsupported comments about "oh, he was just doing his job" unless you live in the D.C. metro area. Maybe a simple stop is forgiving to you and the three other people within a 100 mile radius of Potatopeel, Idaho or Bugtussle, Alabama, but around here, one traffic stop effects about 10,000 others, so multiply that by 10 traffic stops and you'll get a snapshot. If you knew someone was pulled over with no violation and it added another 30 minutes to your hour and a half commute, you folks would **** yourselves.

Maybe.

"Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence..." If there's a third time, polite or not, this is definitely an "issue."

It seems to me that LEO lately are purely there to generate revenue and keep city workers employed. My respect for LEO is at 0% I have only gotten pulled over once and it was my fault, but it makes me curious when I see 5 cop cars lined up waiting for people to make the same mistake I did. Seems to me they know there is confusion on the road and they take advantage of it.

Someone needs to do something with this country before we have CCTV everyone and we start talking with an accent.

I love this country just as much as anyone but the government is TO BIG and no one cares. The government should be scared of the people, not the other way around.
Sounds like you judge everyone by the acts of one person! Walk in the shoes of another, before you voice your useless opinion of anyone. The remark highlighted in red above, is why this country is going down hill fast. Unless you have served in the military, served as a LEO, Firefighter, EMT or other life threatening job, you should keep your liberal mouth shut! Sorry if I was harsh, but you sound like just a punk with no idea what;s coming from your mouth. I hope I'm wrong and you are just having a bad day, but please think before you speak. If everyone had your attitude toward LEO's, life in the US would be like a third world country. By the way, I have seen some bad pilots in my day, but most are very well trained and I respect what they do and would never bad mouth them all for the actions of a few.

I've never been through this myself, but could you have both rolled down the windows and waved? Surely he would have just killed the lights and backed off if thats all he was pulling you over for.

You need to spend the day in the shoes of a NYC "subject" first. I respect LEO/MIL etc, but NYPD is a whole different ball game.

LEO's are like any other profession! Some good, some bad, some are there just to get a check. But we can not live without them. think about it!

#1. Why can't the LEO pull to the side of the car a look first, it would take a lot less time, than going over 6 lanes of traffic, for nothing.

#2. If you get lit up, how do you know what it is for? Who would normally think to turn interior light on?

I see cars in the carpool lane here in CA, looks like one driver, until you get to the side, a person can be sleeping, it can be a child, or a baby in a car seat...

It just seems the LEO could not waste as much time, if he looked inside and confirmed, and only pulled over people to ticket.

I didn't really pull over so he could see inside for the passenger, I initially thought he was after someone other than me.

jsims,

Yeah, the stop was because he thought I was the only one in the car. My wife and I drive on the HOV every day, we work a block away from each other. From behind I can rarely tell if someone has a passenger or not, so I assumed pulling into the right lane and rolling down the window would have been good enough so he could see her. Didn't work......
Next time have her wave out the window.

Maybe, just maybe, that particular LEO's function is to assure ALL the laws/rules of the HOV lane is followed. Many times officers are assigned to functions, such as this, because of citizen complaint(s), guidelines to fundings, etc. Also, the assignment would only be for the time the HOV is functional. Other duties would prevail afterwords.

Not sure what good the interior light would have done. Mine just barely lights the inside of the car. Its not like there is a dome light in the car.

The best part is if they did not inforce the HOV laws most would be crying about the single riders in the HOV lane and complaning about the LEOs not doing somthing about it. Just bad luck for the OP but they do the best they can for the most part.

many folks don't understand this, but he's right. Most officer just do what they are told to do.

Puhleeez....I'm sure there are bad cops as well as good. I have two family members in law enforcement & they don't give a rats a$$ if you're in a Corvette or a Hyundai. If you violate, you get pulled.

Now let's not bash the LEO's in this one. The enforcement here is 100 per cent the result of legislative pressure at both the state/local and federal level.

And anyways, the troopers and patrolmen assigned to this duty were assigned to it by higher ups.

To the OP... Are you windows tinted???

I know from the back of the vehicle it's hard to tell if there are two passengers because of the high backed seats, but at some point you should have passed the LEO, right? Well, if you're windows are tinted he can't see inside... Maybe that's why he said to turn on the interior lights, so he can see inside.

"The guy did remember us; he said next time just turn your interior light on if you see us".

Personally, I think HOV lanes are bullsh*t, they only cause more traffic and more exhaust and they just don't work... They took them off of I-287 in NJ years ago. Then again, that's about the ONLY thing they ever got right in that state.....

You should write a Complimentary Letter to his Department, comending his POLITE and COURTEOUS demeanor. We LEO's should get more positive feedback from the citizens we Serve and Protect!!!
Personally, I get tired of the jerks that think that the traffic laws apply to everybody else but them. Especially the ones who use the HOV lane as their personal passing lane when they think that they don't have to sit in traffic like everybody else. To all you naysayers who think that the officers are just generating revenue, in my 36 years of law enforcement I never once had anybody in the department or city and state government tell me/us that we needed more money for the city/state government, so go out and write more tickets. The officers patrolling the freeways/highways are assigned to "traffic enforcement". That's all traffic laws from HOV lane violations to speed, tail gaters, illegal lane changes, etc. The next time your sitting in traffic and some jerk passes you in the HOV lane because he thinks that his time is more important than yours, you'll be saying "Where's a cop when you need them!" The officer was polite, and courteous and yet you still find cause to bash him! Sounds to me like the only thing that would make you happy is if they just stayed off the freeways/highways completely, except of course when you're broke down on the side of the highway or laying in some ditch because some idiot ran you off the road!!
