A "Check Gas Cap" message keeps coming up.
I checked the gas cap, re-situated it and got back in, 2 minutes later.
"Check Gas Cap"
I cannot find a fix for this, any ideas?
I bought a locking Stant for $11 and have never had an issue. Got it because with the top down, the gas door can still be opened even though the car is locked.
That and the way the CDs can be ejected with the car locked are the only two electrical design flaws that I have found.
It's a common error. You'll find dozens of posts over the years. It is a software problem and has absolutely nothing to do with your gas cap. Members here have repeatedly replaced their gas caps only to find the error returns in a few days or weeks.
Solution: Have your tuner eliminate it or go to your dealer and have them reflash.

Uh,wrong!! The cap is covered for 10 years or 120,000 miles per GM because it's defective. It doesn't close properly in most cases thereby causing the emissions (ck.gas cap) light.Get a new one from any Chevy dealer for free. It's a 5 second swap out.

You failed to comprehend the part where I said "been there, done that."

Hello,
I am not sure how long it has been since you checked your gas cap. Here is some further information that might help:
This message displays if the fuel cap has not
been fully tightened. Check the fuel cap to make
sure that it is on properly. Once tightened, it takes
at least one overnight park to reset or clear this
message. If both the CHECK GAS CAP message
and the malfunction indicator lamp in the
instrument panel cluster are on, you may need to
see your dealer for service.

Oh no,I saw that and I fully comprehend what you said....and you're wrong. It is a bad gas cap, period. Maybe you need to check your wording or something.
I've seen these check gas cap warnings before on my '07 Vette. In my experience, I've found that the gas cap sometimes needs several rotations in order for it to be fully seated. It seems very finicky as other gas caps on any other car I've owned definitely didn't require as much finessing to get to lock in to place... and I even pumped gas for a while about 20 years ago so I've seen quite a few gas caps! Should I ask my dealer for a replacement as this one may be quirky/defective?
I certainly would get a new cap. One hint that might help after you get the new one, don't press down on it when putting it on. Just put it in and turn it.
Just put a new battery in my c6 to bring her back to life, and now I have this code showing: Check Gas Cap
Does it affect the car at all? ie Will that being messed up run down the battery or cause anything to not work?
btw: I checked it. Still had the code. Checked it again. Even after I turn and click it, I can pull it straight out of the hole!!!
GM issued a letter in August 2008 stating that some 2005 Corvettes have a defective gas cap. As a result the 2005 gas cap will replaced at no cost for a period of 120,000 miles or 10 years. The letter states Do not apply downward force to the fuel cap when tightening.

Geoff, you are just too damn good....Thanks for taking the time to actively participate in this and many other threads. I have never had a problem with my dealer or the Z for that matter but if I did I would certainly go to you first.....as many of you others should. Thanks again for monitering and giving out excellent advice....
Get it replaced under warranty, or spend $20 and get a new one. I've gone through two of 'em.
The stock gas cap has a flaw that eventually shows by not providing a good seal. Unfortunately, there is no recall on it. To avoid having a problem try not to tightened more then one or two clicks.

My 2007 would not seat properly. I'd get the message, check the cap and some how the cap would be loose again. I bought a new cap from GM and changed it myself. This is the dealer that cracked my rocker panel during an oil change so I wouldn't trust them with even just changing the gas cap. That was back in 2008. So far so good.

You do realize he was only quoting the owner's manual which is the polite way of saying RTFM? And this was over a month ago but you thought it important to revive the thread now?

Works for me - This very day I got my first "check the gas cap" message.
