I had this message come on yesterday. I added a slight bit of dielectric grease to the rubber on the gas cap, (to make it more sticky) and this morning, the light still came on...
Do I have to purchase a new cap or wait?
I thought it goes away after a couple of cycles???

Give it a few cycles, if it doesn't go out you can either buy a new one or do like I did, call your dealer and bring the car in, there's some kind of bulletin about this and they replaced mine free of charge, good luck!
After lubing up the seal and applying it back on the car, I pulled the battery cable and waited 5 minutes. Reconnected... Everything seems fine now. No more check gas cap alert. It's been 3 days and no more alert!!
I imagine someone mentioned it but FWIW....year's ago I got the 'check gas cap' warning. I went to the dealership and bought a replacement gas cap. Then, a forum member suggested I try screwing the cap back on as 'loosely' as possible. The cap is still on but I don't try to screw it down tight like I might with the gas cap on other cars. I still have the new gas cap I bought 5+ years ago. I've never seen another 'check gas cap' warning.

I think it's going to flat fall off the pipe! If you push on it to make it "tighter" it tosses a code. Just turning it with your fingertips seems to be the answer to this malady. After you put it on, you're sure it will come loose but it doesn't! Weirdest damn thing I've ever had the misfortune to contend with!
