Yes it was a steel tube frame with a magnesium body and Fuel Injected V8. I think it is in the INDY 500 Museum collection.

A while back, when researching magnesium applications in automobiles, I ran across a company that has been in the business for years and they said they made some prototype hoods out of magnesium for the 1952 Corvette. I know, the first Corvette was a 1953, but that was what they said. They may have been asked by GM to make a couple of prototype hoods in 1951 or 1952 and assumed it was for a 1952 Corvette.
I would rather see a Vette with a badge on the side COPO and have it really mean something...
i.e. like ordering a C6 with the ZR1 engine and "IF" you were a drag racer you could get an Automatic, and 3.90 rear.....
Just like it was back in 1966 I bought my SS396 Chevelle and my neighbor bought a YENKO Nova !! Damn I bet that Nova is worth well over $100,000 if it were still around...
I do not think you will ever see it. A tradition thing mainly. The SS program is/was highly tied to the muscle car/pony car era. Back in the days when SS and RS meant something they were never used with the Corvette. That "retro" tie-in just isn't there with the Corvette.
I suspect with the C7 you will see the return of the Sting Ray or Stingray.
OK--Trivia time: name the Elvis movie that stared the SS Corvette (with a slight hood mod, painted red) as the King's main mode of transport (used in the opening and closing scenes of the movie).
naaah. They have so many SS's now, even the Cobalt... its below the Corvette... keep the vette unique... the SS thing has gone way too far......Trail Blazers.. etc.
And what is an "SS"? Its a "super sport" edition of a base model...... the corvette is already a super sports car... no offense.. but ss'n the vette is degrading it.
Don't we have enough options to chose from? Some people are never satisfied.
