Default Adding Hood Vents

I got a bug to add some hood vents to release some heat from the engine bay and to look a little different. I looked around for miscellaneous vents and found these for less than $20:

They're 8.75" x 5" x 1/2". I would have liked for them to be a little bigger but I think they'll do. I'm going to mount them inverted and recessed under the hood after sanding and painting and after I get up the ***** to cut holes in my hood. Its a low priority project so I don't know how long it'll be before I get them done.

Here they are layed out like they'll go in:

I remember when cars had the hoods removed for that.

I personally don't like those particular vents but I was actually thinking about vents today, considering how ****ing hot my car runs lately.

For starters remove the underhood insulation. They call it the "mat" now but that sort of thing used to be called insulation. It's there to mute engine noise. I 'spose it just might raise underhood temp a bit?

You're f*ing crazy! I LOVE IT! They actually make a hood close to that style so if it's done correctly, I don't think it will look bad at all. Which way are you going to mount the vents? With the ports facing forward for air to be rushed in or rearward so air escapes? Forward may make an annoying wind buffeting sound while driving.

Has anyone done any testing to see if the mat makes a difference?

Rearward, like in the bottom most pic of post #1, for the air to escape.

Yea, the Violator hood is similar. http://www.sicmsp.com/shop/part?part_id=136

That hood is OK but the real inspiration for this came from the Hi-Tech/MTI vented hood. I LOVE that hood but am not willing to part with $1200 plus prep and paint for it. http://www.sicmsp.com/shop/part?part_id=128

These may look a little funny because they are not quite big enough. I just wanted to get them in house to take a look. If/when I do it they will be painted body color and either empxoed to the bottom of the hood or on top but either way they will be recessed and I think they'll look good. I promise they will not look like this:

I am also considering the below, which are 22" long by 11" wide. They are ~$185 but may be worth it.

If you're reluctant to cut your original hood buy one from a salvage company and have at it (my friend did that for his C6 track car). That way, whenever you sell the car you could easily put the original hood back on. Those DIY vents don't look bad but I agree they should be larger...could you double them up? I've seen some very nice, after market, louvered hoods but they're obviously more expensive.

I love that everything has to be expensive to be good. I love the idea and can't wait to see it finished

I would say more than a few will be watching this thread - there is a guy on the forum who has done this already but I can't remember his handle....

There is a guy who cut a square in the hood and caught flack up and down for it. I've PM'ed him about the tools he used to do it but won't rat him out for fear he will catch more crap.

There is also another forum member who has holes cut in similar places with just mesh underneath. I won't rat him out either. I'll just say that he has more of a reason to do it than anyone. Those turbos gotta breathe.
