Default Power Window Initialize (Resetting the Window Indexing)

After a power reconnect such as battery replacement, the
window index-up feature will not function until the system
is initialized. Once power is restored, do the following:
1. Close the door.
2. Raise the window by pulling up the switch.
3. Hold the up switch for three seconds after the
window is closed. Release the switch.
4. Hold the up switch again for three seconds and
release.
Remember to do both windows.

This is called resetting of the window indexing or power window initialize and is in the owner's manual. See page 2-17 of the 2005 owner’s manual, page 2-18 of the 2006 owner’s manual, page 87 of the 2007 owner’s manual, page 2-18 of the 2008 owner’s manual, page 2-18 of the 2009 owner's manual, page 3-18 of the 2010 owner's manual, page 2-18 of the 2011 owner's manual, or page 2-19 of the 2012 owner's manual.

Thanks Jim. Asked a fair amount of times and pretty sure that most would look here before the manual.

AWESOME!!!! I disconnected the battery and immediately noticed that the window did not 'index" when i shut the door..

thanks... Also would this cause the alarm not to sound when i open the door..

After reconnecting the battery, I arm the alarm/lock the car yet i am still able to open the door from the outside and the alarm doesnt go off?? Never did that before..

If you have the fob with you that's why. You can lock the door but if you have the fob on your person when you try to open it, the car will unlock. That's part of the purpose behind the fob system. When you press the pad on the door switch, the car looks for the fob. If it sees a valid fob it will unlock the door (locked, alarmed or otherwise). Try locking the door with the button on the fob then place the fob on the ground 50 feet away and then try to go back and open the door and you will find that won't open. Go back with the fob in your pocket and it will.

Another proven method that works (at least for my 2008 and may work for all years???) is to:

1. start the car-with both doors closed...
2. raise and lower both windows 3X together
3. on the 3rd time on the up movement ( you start with them up, go down and back up = one time!), SHUT OFF THE CAR, EXIT AND CLOSE THE DOOR. THE WINDOW SHOULD INDEX ITSELF. AND ALL IS WELL! IF NOT, JUST REDO THE ABOVE PROCEDURE; SOMETIMES IT MAY TAKE 2 OR 3 TIMES. Most of the time, it takes once; one time it took me twice!
But it does work!

Voilla! Success!

Sure seems like a lot of extra work, THAT MAY OR MAY NOT WORK.

The one in the manual works every time. I guess that's why it's the one in the manual.

Great sticky! I found out this procedure when I hooked up the battery after installing an insulation kit. I thought I broke the car since the windows would not go up. I did find it in the Owner's Manual though.

Me too. My driver-side window index-up feature stopped functioning yesterday for no apparent reason. Haven't had any electrical anomalies or service, battery OK, never had DBS, everything else has always worked. Did the UP/HOLD/UP AGAIN/HOLD drill and it worked, thank you.

This happened when I got my windows tinted. They hit the door switch so the window would stay up when the door was opened. The way I did it was get in the car, put the window all the way up holding the switch for xtra 3 seconds, all the way down, hold for another xtra 3 seconds, and then all the way back up, holding for xtra 3 seconds and that was it. I love my vette!!

I finally had to do this for the first time yesterday, and I actually remembered the correct procedure from reading this sticky.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and I have as little as anyone.

Thanks for posting, had to do this today. Hadn't driven the vette for over a month and the radar detector drained the battery.

I learned about the window indexing the hard way.....took a few days to get the car dried out after I noticed that the windows were not closing all the way.

Drivers window has stopped about three inches from top.
It will go down all the way but stops when trying to close.
Motor slows to stop position.
How do you remove door panel?
Anyone experienced this situation, suggestions?
I did replace battery months back, no window indexing problem experienced till present.

Since this is not a problem with window indexing, it's possible that no one here would see your post. Several have posted in the forum in the past about removing the door panel, but I do not have a link to those threads.

You may want to post a new thread in C6 General asking for help with this. However, I'd look first in the C6 FAQ sticky.
