Is the camera a good color resolution ?
pros and cons?
I decided not to throw money at the OE NAV. I have a Kenwood 9980 on order. The currently installed camera image shown in the above post is displayed on a Magellan 1700 NAV. The image is really good and displays a NTSC resolution.

By replacing the OE NAV unit with an after market one, do you lose any factory functionality? And didn't you have to buy the factory NAV option with the car for about $2K?

Have you installed your camera yet? Any photos on how this looks? How dose it work for vision spread side to side?

I also have a new GS but with a new Kenwood HU so I'm hunting for the right solution as everything is now wired for a camera.

Kenwood 6960 comes with NAV, IPOD, Tuner, DVD, XM, Sirris, Bluetooth, 6.1" screen and it looks OEM with a backup camera you can really drive with. All your Steering wheel control still function and it sounds and looks great

My 9980 Kenwood comes this week. I have a Magellan GPS that I have been using as a backup display. I posted pics of daytime and night shots of the display. Since the camera is a NTSC it has the same resolution on the GPS as it will have on the Kenwood. NTSC is NOT high def resolution. The camera is not used to record video and I think it works great for a backup camera. 170 degrees is about industry standard for OE backup cameras. The specs for the camera I am using are.

Specifications

Size: 3.5cm x 3.2cm
Sensor:1/3"color CMOS, OV7950
Effective pixels:656X492
lens angle:170 degrees
Resolution: 420 TV Lines
Shutter speed: 1/60s-20us
Waterproof: IP67
Minimum illumination: 0.2Lux
Voltage:12V
Operating temperature: -40 to +80 RH95%Max

TV System: NTSC

I had a reverse camera on my C5. It was cool, but discoverd that it was not a 'reverse image' camera.. So what you thought was on your right was actually on your left looking at the screen.

Do these newer model cameras use 'reverse image' so what is on your left, is actually on the left of the screen? I learned of this after being in a motor home with the 'real deal' dedicated rear facing camera. So, I said, OH yeah.. that makes a lot more sense.

Yes the camera is a reverse image and has parking guide lines in the camera. I know when to stop and how far away I am using the parking grid. In the image you see the edge of the bumper in the lower corners. I still use my side mirrors and rearview then goto the camera view. I have been amazed how I can parallel park using the camera on the first try.

Found a Reverse Camera that does not require a large hole to mount.

I put in an Alpine stereo and added the back up cam. Nice. Nav screen switches to cam automaicly when in reverse. Also has over ride for cam view while driving. Moulding tape holds the cam on.

The camera I posted the link to requires a much smaller hole. I had to make a 18mm hole to install my backup camera. A 5mm hole would have been easier.

I'm looking at getting a front camera now.

I have ordered and will recieve my 9980 this coming week from Dennis and am gonna install the camera in back too. How did you run the wires to the radio? What recommendations do you have for doing this?

I wired the power for the reverse camera to the reverse lights (see pics above). Wires run down the passengers side. The Kenwood radio has a purple wire which needs to be connected to the reverse lights also. As soon as you shift into reverse the image is displayed. This all depends on which camera you go with. Kenwood cameras are wiried differently than I did it. Your biggest challenge will be the wiring harness & connecting all the other wires to it. I had put together a Wiring Matrix you will need to help navigate which wires connect to which. I suggest you lay out the Kenwood wiring harness, Chime module, & Steering Wheel Control Module as you will have some 20 wires to crimp together. I soldered all my connections then butt crimped all the wires. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/audi...ng-matrix.html

I also wired up the NPP Exhaust so I could control it from the Kenwood.

And I hooked the purple wire directly to the fuse location- much shorter and easier. In addition to installed the camera this way I also used a relay and used teh kenwood switch control to turn the camera and and off at will. The reverse function works as it should. Remember these wires give power to the camara to function. I also used the 2nd kenwood switch to run the NPP exhaust. Good thing here is that the Kenwood allow the setting to remain either open or closed. If you set up the NPP to be closed it will start open (to save battery power) and shut down the butterfly valves. Or you can toggel it as well. really works well.

Cyber-vette said it right. You need to take some time and fully layout where everything is going. I completely re-did the head unit, amps, speakers, wiring, signal mirrors, and led ligthing interior and exterior so it can get very complicated if you don't plan. MY interior was also completely reinsulated and sound dampened from fire wall to the rear end. What a difference inside. I also ran some spare wire in my bundle for the just in case from the interior fuse location on the passenger side all the way to the farthest point in the cargo area cubby space. One suggestion is tag all your wire both ends with electrical ID tape so you don't have to figure it all out again once you do final connections OR want to change something later. Solder and tape all connections for reliability. Crimping wires with connectors do have the ability to fail and that's a dog to find later on..

I purchased three items to make the NPP switch work.

10amp pigtail which I blew to prevent it from working as a normal fuse would. You could purchase any amp pigtail fuse since you just want it for the wire that is soldered onto it. This will provide the left side of the fuses power.

Add-a-Fuse which I used for the right side of the fuses power which is the 12v source.

I used a 10 amp fuse and plugged the pigtail fuse into the add-a-Fuse. See picture. This setup allows each side of the fuse to be separated until the relay adds the power to break the circuit and the exhaust valve is opened.

30amp relay with wiring harness. I wired the relay as listed in the wiring matrix. The exhaust operates normally until you activate the relay in the Kenwood. This relay came with a bracket which I used to mount it to the car see pic of relay fuse mounting location. Configure the relay for level power in the Kenwood setup.

What wire did you tap into in the rear to get the constant/aac 12v to power the cam? Or did you have to run a live wire back to the cam from the head unit?

One of the best mods you can do IMO... I love my back-up cam set-up as well. Nice set-up Cyber Vette...
