Can someone explain them to me? Is this something that every vette should have or something that only certain mods will make it a must have? How hard is the installation?
For a steet driven car it is not that neccessary to have. It catched the oil vapors and traps them in the can so they don't re-enter the air intake and mess up the MAP
The LS series of motors will allow some oil saturated air to escape the PCV check valve and the vapors produced will consolodate in and around the intake and MAF as a puddle of oil at the MAF. The catch can will provide a place for that consolodated vapor to accumulate. They are relatively easy to install (depending upon model year, some being easier than others) with basic hand tools that most will have on hand and are a pretty discrete mod.
The catch can will pass the air from the PCV through an orifice in the can which will basically separate the heavier oil from the lighter air and pass the air on to the intake path.
The debate on who needs them and why has been raging basically since the cans were introduced several years ago. At the end of the day most of the LSx series of motors use some oil. If you don't have an oil leak and you find that you are using oil between oil changes, guess where it is going. You can easily fill half a can between oil changes with just a few hard accelerations a week on an LSx motor and this will head back in to your intake manifold if it isn't trapped. The quantity of oil passed is what is potentially going to damage the MAF and end up in the manifold.
Is there a brand that's better than the rest or different levels of catch cans?
Thanks for all of the great replies.
The first that I was aware of several years ago (and the one that I sell on my website) is manufactured by Elite Engineering. In my opinion it is well made (both cosmetically and structurally) and All of my customers have been very pleased with it.
Here is a link to the product page on my website. This will give you a little more to read up on and a chance to see a few photos of the actual product.
There's a problem with my website order form. If you choose to order one through me just note what color you would like in the notes to seller during checkout or send me a PM after the fact. The cans are available in anodized red, blue, black and plain silver (aluminum color). I'm trying to get the missing information resolved but wanted to offer the link so you could get a look at the can and the options.
From: The Great Pacific Northwest...........I carry a gun cause a cops too heavy.
I have had a catch can installed in my 05 for several years. My car is only street driven but I will accumulate 3 to 4 oz between each oil change. To me this is a significant amount and I'm glad that its not accumulating in my intake.

So what? What is it going to do?
Before answering, please remember, 99.9% of all Corvettes out there do not use these and they run fine, including my 8 C5's and 3 C6's that I did/do drive aggressively.

I purchased a can from Paul and I do not track my GS. Very seldom go WOT or hard accelerations. I decided to check it recently at about 3500 miles on the oil and the can was almost 1/2 full. I was very surprised, but also very happy that oil was not in my intake. I checked my oil level and it was fine (Mobil 1 Syn).

I'm glad I have one. Just my $.02.
Again, so what??? Do you think eventually there will be 20 gallons accumulating in your intake??
We have completed over ten years of the LS motors and....again, oil in the intake has done nothing to harm these motors whatsoever. 99.9% of Corvette owners who DO NOT use these can't be wrong.
