- The emissions have to be in specification under a very wide range of operating conditions. So, the tuning parameters are NOT pushed toward the upper or lower end of the performance envelope. C5's and C6's are driven in -30 deg winters and 130 desert days.
- There are safety stops in the GM tune. Torque management strictly limits a significant amount of TQ when the transmission is an A6.
- GM tunes the cars for grand mothers, wives, and fo people who do not want cars on the ragged edge. Thats why they make VIPERS and ZR1's.
The tune keeps the idle and driving manners well maintained but still allows spirited driving. If you tune a STOCK C5/C6, you can usually easily find 10-15 hp and some more Tq. For the A6 crowd, the refined transmission tune will be significant!
Tuners have found out that they can alter numerous tables in the C5 PCM / C6 ECU and enhance driveability, performance and sometimes even emissions and driveability. It can sometimes effect RELIABILITY if you do not do up-grades to counter act the things that GM was trying to protect. (Example: When you remove the Torque Management, you need to alter other A6 calibrations to prevent transmission damage.)
So, the C5/C6 tune can be altered to enhance performance and retain or even improve emissions.

When you MODIFY any C5/C6, tuning is a MUST to alter all the things that a stock tune can not correct for or was designed to control.
