I went last year to the first one in Orange County, Ca. It's really a lot of fun and I'd say it beats any car show that I've ever seen. I won't miss it this June either.
Barrett-Jackson seems much more honest than Mecum. Mecum comes to Kansas City and I have been tempted to go, but they are sooooo sleazy on TV. Also, reserve auctions are BS. I like the fact that you can see some real nice cars go for cheap money at Barrett.

I will say that Mecum puts on a better view show for television. BJ spends too much time showing people and not enough time showing the cars! Mecum shows the cars and usually more than 2 before a freekin commercial!
Are any of the Vendors going to be at this show? Seems like they have a nice area for shopping? I'm thinking of going tomorrow to avoid the craziness of the weekend crowds.
Barrett Jackson is a fun event but the cars are not as pristine as they seem...until you get one of those rare types. I bid on a couple cars there last year, and the year before, going to pass this year.
I work at a bank and I am a workout guy, so I have done my share of liquidating over the 38 years in my job. I am finding that these days, most auctioneers charge a buyer's premium, it's a way of life. The trick is to find an auctioneer that has a good following and will bring top dollar (or near it) for the item. B - J seems to do both well, from my prospective. However, I do have to admit it is fun watching some of these fools trying to outbid other fools on a car that either has a "hemi", or that has been somehow "touched" by C. Shelby. Think about where these prices were 2 or 3 yrs ago, and where they are now.
America is a yard sale these days,Nothing is worth what it once was...too bad!
I'm convinced that it's the atmosphere that must drive the prices up so high on these cars.
Case in point, I've been trying to sell my '70 Chevelle SS for nearly a year now and I'm having little luck. Last night I see a car that's similar to mine go for double what I'm asking.
Maybe I should take the time and lug my ride out there and sell it.
I go every year (10 now) and always get free tickets (Ford dealers, Chevy dealers, etc.) free parking, free shuttle service, free bottled water (Bridgestone booth) and $4 brats (U.S. Army booth/food cart)... so Craig Jackson is not really getting much from me or the other 8 friends I always go with. I also live 3.5 miles from the venue.
I went on Tue. to preview... Corvette Racing Had a great booth that I am going back to on Thur. and will take pix.
sure, he is not getting all the "cash" from you and your friends but he IS getting plenty of money from all those folks that paid to get the "free" stuff to give to you. nothing is "free" when it comes to B-J. i started going to this event in 1996. it costs a TON of money to put this show on.
I watch B-J from time to time but the novelty is sort of wearing off. I enjoy seeing the nice cars but with the number of auctions they're doing now each year it just doesn't seem as special as it used to. I'm only a couple hours away but I'm almost afraid to go there...I just know I'd find some car I couldn't live without. I realize buying at an auction like B-J probably isn't the smartest way to buy a car.

It may cost a ton to put on but remember that they are getting tv revenues, vendor rentals, sales fees, etc, etc. Don't forget that on top of all these other fees, any bidders pay a $500 fee just to be a bidder!
Gimme a break, these guys are making a buttload of money!!

it's a great place to buy a car IF you want the best. with that on the docket, others are looking for the same and there within lies the problem with higher, even stupid prices. no other (large) auction event will have as many #1 and #2+ cars going over the block. you should go just one time .

read my post. i never said that they weren't making tons of money. my point simply was people forget that it costs huge bucks to produce this event. you certainly don't work for free and would take a big increase in salary if it was available. you don't have to remind me what the bidders fees are, i've been participating as a bidder since 1996. so what was you point? i forgot.
