It is a replacement module for Onstar that enables bluetooth functionality but disables Onstar. Onstar is supposed to have a replacement mirror coming out this spring that will add bluetooth to an existing car but the details on it are sketchy atm. I am kind of waiting to see what shakes out in the next 6 months.
The BLUESTAR 2010 is an integrated communications system designed to allow bluetooth communications in your GM vehicle. It works by utilizing the onstar equipment in your vehicle (microphone and mirror keypad) to communicate to a hands free car kit which connects to your cellphone.
There are NO EXTRA CHARGES to pay EVER. You use YOUR phone with YOUR minutes as you see fit.
Better yet, the BLUESTAR is invisible in your vehicle. There are no wires to run, no speakers to install, no microphone to route, and no ugly chrome keypad glued to your dash. And since the BLUESTAR takes advantage of the high quality sound equipment already installed in your vehicle, the audio quality is far superior to other bluetooth options including car kits and headsets.
Make calls, answer calls, mute calls, and transfer calls all using the existing onstar mirror buttons. And if your phone is equipped with voice dialing, you can do it all with the touch of a button.
I'll wait for the onstar one... I'd rather not disable the saftey part of Onstar.. Driving like I stole it with my music blasting is all I want to do.. If I need to be on the phone that bad I'll pull over...
The "Aftermarket" OnStar Mirror is designed for cars without OnStar.
It probably won't mount to the Corvette (since it uses a non-standard mirror mount).
Also even if it did, the internal OnStar module and Antenna would be superseded by the new ones in the unit (the OnStar system is self contained in the mirror).
ah.. that stinks.. oh well.. I'd still want my Onstar to work so it'll be a earphones for me..
Bluestar sounds great but can I get something similar with an upgrade to the sound and navigation system? If I upgrade my sound to a navigation system, do I need Bluestar?

If you upgrade from the stock sound system to a factory Navigation set up, you would need Bluestar for your phone (Bluetooth) feature.
On the other hand, if you installed an after market system, such as Pioneer of Kenwood, which came with a Bluetooth feature, no need for Bluestar.
Bluestar simply uses the On Star system and converts it to a Bluetooth hands free system for your cell phone.
I installed the BlueStar about 6 months ago in my 2008. It works pretty well. When I tested it after I first installed it, I was not happy because of feedback issues. Then, when the feedback was in check, the other party could not hear me. The solution was to load the software from CoStar and tweak the mic input/output parameters. On my 2008, volume to hear the other person is controlled by the radio volume. So, if I have the tunes cranked up and someone calls, if I forget to turn the radio volume down, there will be feedback at the beginning of the call (until I turn the volume down). Physical installation involves unplugging the stock OnStar unit (just to the front of the right side cubby hole under the hatch on a base 2008) and plugging in the BlueStar unit. And, then tweaking the software parameters if necessary. Since I got it dialed in, I have been very happy with the BlueStar unit. Do a search on BlueStar or CoStar for more info.
well I just took the plunge and ordered one of these, installed in about 2mins and works a treat, call quality is excellent. Much better than my rubbish tomtom iphone cradle I had been using previously.
It will be even better when they release the ATDP software update to allow you to stream music to the stereo, until then i'll keep using the aux-in adaptor purchased from KAWAL into the headphone port.
I ordered and received my Blustar from Costar Technologies. I installed it in my 2008 Corvette Coupe this morning.
The Onstar module in the 08 is located in the right rear storage box, behind the front wall carpeting IN THE WELL of the storage box. There's not alot of room in there, so as a temp fix I just made a slice in the storage box carpet, so I can leave the module in the storage box. (I'm thinking some velcro might give it some support)
Afterwards, I followed the included directions to pair the Bluestar with my iPhone4. So far I'm extremely pleased. The Onstar buttons work as advertised in their instructions, and the radio mutes when a call comes in, and unmutes when the call ends.. The clarity of my voice as heard by the folks I called was excellent, as was their voices coming through the Onstar speaker.
I'm sure some challenge will pop up as I use the system, but right now I'm very pleased!
