Is there a way to modify the door hinge so that it has an extra detent somewhere in the middle?

Our doors are soo big and the stock two detents are either too small of an opening or all the way open. I need one in between so I can open the door and get out without having to hold it open in-between the two detents (really only one).

 

I don't know but that's an interesting idea. I'd take the car to a quality auto shop that does fabrication work and see what they think. I'm guessing its doable. Good luck!

I've been thinking for years that the auto industry needs to come up with a door stop system that lets me open the door to *any* position and have it held there. Seems a simple thing, really. If Ford can come up with "active grill shutters" () surely GM can come up with a better door stop system. Then they can advertise their "active door clamping."

Another detent halfway between the first one and wide-open would be great!

I actually have had to touch up the paint on my passenger door because of this problem

 

Take it to a fab shop (one with a water-jet would be best) They could cut out new ones the way you want very easily. Not sure about install though or what to make them out of.
