When I was at a show recently a vendor had someone's C-5 coupe up on a cheesy lift that looked like it could be moveable. I questioned him on the lack of jacking pucks used considering the underside glass was bent in under the pad. He just looked at me and said it'll pop right back out - no problem. I'm glad it wasn't my car that he had up there and his general lack of concern.
That guy was clueless. He could car less about the car and just wanted to sell that cheesy looking lift. The rocker panels are not flexible plastic or urethane like on a lot of other cars. They do crack very easily if not careful. There are plenty of threads here where even the dealership employees damaged a few.
With that being said, I've never used pucks. You just have to know where and how to lift it.
But he was using a scissor lift. Definitely need pucks for that.
No reason to buy those over priced PUCKS.I use a piece of 2+4 with a eye bolt from the hardware store.
no offense but this is a 60k sports car and i dont wanna look like a hobo getting out my 2x4 when there are vendors on here selling jacking pucks that are made for the car for under $20.
A puck is not required to lift the car as long as the jack/lift pad is the right type.
When I first bought my Vette there was a DIY thread about Jacking pucks and a lot of hype about needing them.
Well I made a set from hockey pucks & eye bolts, however I have yet to need these things. I have a lot of work done on my car, but the only hands that ever touch it are expert Corvette tuners/mechanics who know what they're doing.
But *just in case* those pucks lie there, year after year waiting in the cubby hole for that rare event when I just might need them
I bought some pucks (red anodized aluminum!) before I even bought the car, but I never use them. My floor jack's lift pad has a rubber insert, and its diameter fits neatly in the rocker panel's square-ish cutout.
Just be careful, and no pucks are necessary.
If I used them, then I'd have to raise the car before putting the jack under the puck (car is lowered slightly), and that's just too much wasted time.
If I remember right some of the BMW's use jacking pucks also. I've seen some members use their pucks since they're cheaper. If you have the right jack I wouldn't doubt it'll lift no problem but I always have a set of pucks in the storage compartment just in case.
