C6 Clutch longevity?
Anyone give me a rough idea how long a C6 clutch lasts? I realize it depends how you drive but how many miles are most getting?
What's it cost to have a shop do it?

I've seen prices quoted here from about $1400 - $2000, dealers being at the high end, independent shops that know what they're doing at the low end.

I agree w. Rick above, but fr. what I've read, it's usually toward the upper end of the range for cost.
As to longevity? Too hard to tell. I've watched good friends who have been driving manual trans all their lives, slip sliding away....on the clutch pedal. I can't imagine how theirs last more than 1/2 the life of better clutch users.
If I had to make a stab at it, I'd guess for a good technical clutch operator, 40K miles or a lot more, not only depending on how you drive (or how well), but where. You can rack up a lot of highway miles without shifting except to 6th gear for 300 miles+...

I agree with Bill...other than extreme driving, I believe the most important factor in clutch life is the driver. I had a friend who would sort of keep his foot on the gas when shifting, allowing the engagement of the clutch to slow the engine down to the speed of the car at every shift....this has got to cut the life in half.

The C6 clutch is actually pretty darn good. Mine held up at 600whp for 4 years until I turned up the boost and went ahead a had a Spec clutch put in.

I love the stock clutch. I have 440 drag strip passes on mine, with 5000-6000 rpm launches...and 55,000 daily driving miles. Still gives me 1.5 60 foots at will.

The key is keeping the clutch fluid clean. Thanks Ranger for the info.
I think this is the key to clutch longevity, particularly if you drive the car hard. I've been doing it since new, and before and after each track event.

My clutch lasted 39K, 3 years of autocross and 1 track day. GM books 11 hours to swap a clutch, up here thats $1300 in labor alone. I put in the LS9x clutch when mine went out, $1400 and it took me the better part of 3 days. Now that I have done it I think I would be much faster.

My C5 clutch failed at 55K, cost $2,200.00 to replace at the dealer. GM picked up the cost of the clutch parts (All of $500.00). My clutch was defective. I have had clutches go well over 100K in other vehicles.

I think if you're bone stock and don't hit the strip, you'll never have any trouble with the clutch even if you don't change the fluid. I'll qualify my comment above.

After almost 8 years of the C6 there doesn't seem to be a huge number of clutch replacements here on the forum. I don't do high RPM launches but I run road courses with constant high RPM shifting. I freshen-up the clutch fluid regularly per the 'Ranger' method. I consider the C6 clutch to be durable but obviously, hard use and/or improper driving technique can adversely affect longevity. In general, I wouldn't have any concerns about the C6 clutch.

Bone stock car on the street with no race use should last 100k miles....take that same car and race it every weekend on the road course with slicks....maybe 40k-50k.

I gained a friend while in the service oh so many years ago. He was a country boy from way, way up in Montana right across from the Canadian border. His family owned much land where they farmed trees and he was used to working on trucks, cars, Caterpillar dozers, and all sundry of machinery and vehicles from the time he was knee high to a grasshopper. This guy was the smartest guy I ever met when it came to wheeled vehicles. He could watch an 18 wheeler going down the highway and vizualize every gear turning in the thing, tell you what the gear ratios were, and all their specs. Man, this guy was s-m-a-r-t about the stuff. He taught me to double clutch when upshifting to reduce the wear and increase the life of the clutch. I've been doing that ever since.
