3M film on windshield
Thinking about having the 3M film installed on my windshield. I just got it installed on my front 1/3 of my 2012 and was wondering if any one had this done to their windshield.

Is this a serious question or are you just wanting to see what kinds of responses you'll get?

I don't know if they're 3M or not but one of my racing friend's uses clear plastic 'tear-aways' on his windshield. They help protect his windshield from flying projectiles. I think he has a guy here locally that cuts them for him. Optically, it's not like looking through clear glass but it isn't too bad. Personally, I wouldn't feel the need for protective windshield film on a street driven car but it can be done. Good luck!

I had asked a 3M clear bra installer about that and he said that it would not be advisable since the material will scratch. So, if you turn on your windshield wipers (wet or dry) it will scratch the material and you would be replacing the clear bra regularly.

I like this forum, but I assure you I don't have time to ask questions just to see the responses. Here in Chicago the guy that installed my film also had it installed on his Acura's windshield, so I thought I would ask. Excuuuussse Meeeee. Next time anyone asks a question on this forum I guess they will have to PM you to find out if it passes the 4thC4at60 "test"!!!

Thanks for you response. What prompted the question was two fold. First, as I mentioned, I saw it on my installer's Acura and it was over 2 years old and it looked fine. Secondly, there was a thread today talking about the cost of replacing a windshield and some one had quoted $1200 so I start thinking about some type of preventative measure.

First: Check your state code; there may be restrictions similar to putting tint on the windshield unless there is a medical necessity.
Second: Replacing a windshield should be covered under comprehensive; mine is and the deductible is $100. I replaced mine after 75K miles.

NASCAR racers use tear-offs to cover the Lexan windshields -- see this story:

Of course, they've got a lot more money to spend on "accessories" than most of us do....

After a large hit on my windshield-I'm buying tear offs for my next track days. At a $1000 a pop-replacing the windshield sucks.

Actually I think a few of these idiots owe you an apology... There are films for protecting glass windshields, it was discussed briefly on the z06 section recently. Google "clear film for windshield protection" and you will find a few companies offering film similar to the 3m film used for paint protection but made for glass. I think it's a neat idea, I'd love to just tear off and replace at 40-50k miles when it starts getting sandblasted. -Dan

If you have glass coverage with your insurance company replacing it should not be a concern. I would think there are too many downsides to applying the 3m to the windshield so I would not do it.

Its interesting material. A friend of mine had his brand new GT-R windshield treated and it looks fine. In fact, he had the whole car done. Instead of the clear bra approach they just did the whole car. It is hard to see the plastic sheet, it wraps around the edges and unless you knew it was there you would never know. He tracks the car, so its worth a try.
