Why does a convertible cost more than the Coupe?

Two hookers standing on a corner; one is attractive and the other oozes pure "SEX"!
Guess which one is going to cost you more?

I think convertables always cost more when any make/model is offered as both a convertable and a hardtop/targa/T-top. They also weigh more. I've had both in Camaro and Corvette. When I went to buy a new Vette, convertable was my choice despite the cost. The ragtops have more stuff under the car to make up for the loss of structure from a fixed or removeable top. That may account for some of the added cost. But I agree, the verts have a premium price that may not be justified versus any added cost in their production.

Personally, if the 'vert cost less, I would still buy a Coupe.
That's just me. I ride motorcycles about 15,000 miles a year, on average.
I get my fill of being in the wind.
When I'm driving my vehicles, I like it quiet.

Personally, I do like the looks of the Convertible better than the Coupe (top up or down) to me it has more of a balanced look. However, money was an issue..... but I still love my GS Coupe!

"In honor of jpee"
26 lbs. more in my model year, similarly-equipped. but that's kind of a small premium to pay......

I'm 61, 185 lbs., work out every day, owned a 2006 vert when I was 59, and based on your stupid response, I'm betting I could kick your ****. Meet me in the parking lot. And remember, us old farts don't take prisoners.
Seriously, that is a totally inane response... (If you don't know what inane means, which I'm sure you don't, Google "inane")

Difference is about $4k. Now if you want a transparent or both roofs for the targa then it is down to $2.5-3.2k. Vert is definitely more complex as far as the roof goes. Most vehicles require additionally structure to support it.
As far as which one is best though both are great. I have owned both versions of the C6. The targa is great but you just cannot beat the noise the exhaust makes with the roof down. Even stock NPP sounds great. Gas mileage is less in a Vert, about 1/2 as much trunk space in the Vert, wind noise is slightly more but you have zero squeaky latches to worry about and with the top stowed the targa's trunk space also decreases. If you are desperate for long distance trunk space in the vert you could always open up the back cover and store light luggage in there.
Regardless both are great.

Then after spending THOUSANDS more for the cool factor, try taking one to the track. But they doo look cool sitting in the Paddock watching the other vettes play.

Targa,Hardtop,Vert. Whole different look. Depends on your taste. I am a older 'fat' man. 6'1 and 240. LOL. I never looked at or thought of anything but a vert when shopping vettes. I have the top down even in the high 30s low 40s. In a city with lots of stop and go traffic I have a semi auto 32 under my right thigh with a round ready. Towns in Florida made me nervous with what I was in traffic with or who approached me at red lights.

New coupe here, with dual roof package. My last two cars were convertibles, both of which were more expensive than their hard-top siblings (a BMW and a 350Z).
My dermatologist told me to take a break. The coupe with removable targa was my compromise. I promise to use more sunblock.

Interesting discussion on this thread, to each his own.
As a manufacturng guy (ex GMr) - a "typical" vert cost more to build than the coupe given a typical car i.e. F body (camaro). There is more engineering, more weight (bracing is added to the frame) and add mfg cost. There is also definately a marketing premium. With the Vettte the base frame is designed to be topless so the weight is about the same. On the base and GS the top does not add much regidity to the car.
We chose the GS because IMO the vette vert with the top up does not have as clean a look as the coupe, however, with the top down the vert is nice: besides the top comes off on the coupe. We already own two verts so the lines of the coupe GS sold us.
I have a read a great deal of threads on what to buy, ZR1, Z06, GS, base, vert etc. If you need the HP and/or you are going to the track the two Z's are the way to go. However, IMO if the top does not come off forgetaboutit.
