Well I finally put a deposit down on my new SSB vette and I get to pick it up Wednesday. Question though ..is the skip shift eliminator needed or is it something you learn how to avoid ? I was just going to order it now so I can install it day one but if it is not needed than I won't?
The skip shift eliminator was the first mod I did to my '11. Skip shift didn't engage that often for me, but when it did it was very annoying when you try to shift into second.
I had it on my old f-body and felt like it almost wasn't worth driving without it. However, in the vette (2008 coupe), I rarely ever notice it. Try driving it around for a while. I guess it's cheap enough to just put on from the beginning and never think about it again, but I'm not sure you "need" it.
IMO not really needed. I learned to wind 1st gear our past 20 mph or accelerate briskly enough that it rarely engages. If I feel it engage I just push up smoothly into 3rd gear. No problem!
You can learn to drive without the skip shift eliminater. You just kind of get used to learning how to avoid the skip shift. Hard to explain, but I had this on my 94 Z-28 and on my 2012 Corvette, No skip shift eliminator needed on either car.
Drive the car for a while and you can decide for yourself.

First thing installed on my 01Z, 06Z and now 2011 ZR1. Do it once and never have to think about it ever again.
You can also defeat it by another shifting technique. If the computer commands it, go ahead and allow the shifter to go part way into 4th. You will find then that you can now bring it out and into 2nd as you had originally wanted to do before the CAGS locked you out.

It's definitely one of those "must have mods" just like the M2W controller if your Corvette is equipped with the optional NPP exhaust system.
I you want one I have an extra laying around I will send to you. Pm me if you want it.

Like others said, do it on day 1 and forget about it. Learn how to avoid? Come on, it's only 20 bucks and 20 min install! I don't understand the point of CAGS!
A MOD you do not need. You will hardly ever notice the skip shift light, all you need to do is give it a bit more throttle before shifting into second, if it comes on. Try it and see for yourself, you can always decide later, no big deal.
For less than $2 you can do the "fuse" mod, and it can be reversed an a few seconds. Search for the DIY thread. Beats raising the car, and works perfectly.

So is that the way it works. I am new to a manual in the Corvette. Is the only time it wont shift into second is when that light is on, once it goes out is it ok to shift to second.

You got it, once you give it a bit of more throttle the light goes out and you can shift away. Believe me it will not be an issue.
One goes in the fuse box under the hood. Another brand plugs in under the car more difficult.
I tired to live with CAGS but grew to hate it
As others have mentioned here, I did the smart-fuse mod, works like a charm, cost a couple of bucks, you just replace a fuse in the fuse box. I found the how-to by searching this forum
Replace the fuse only time it doesn't go from first to fourth is if you are giving it 2-3000 rpm and in normal driving you don't need that so it will almost simulate a missed shift and can cause someone to rear end you because it locks out 2nd while you are trying to shift. It was my first mod.
