Here is my .02 Judging by the members in my Corvette club who own C5/C6 cars I don't see the ZL-1 hurting the Corvette. Most of our members are 50+ years old and they don't use the power of the Corvette now. Corvette owners seam to be always Corvette owners. Most of the new Corvette sales are repeat Corvette owners.
Take the ZO6 sales have dropped big time when the Grand Sport came out. Buyers didn't care about losing 69 HP they bought the look and the top coming off or going down.
Did the CTS-V hurt Corvette sales? The ZL-1 and Mustang will bash heads!!!

Not for many buyers. For one, it's too damn heavy. This thing is going to come in at well over 4000 lbs, so even with that kind of HP on tap, it will be hard pressed to beat a base vette in a straight. It will howevr out drink the vette at the gas station! For another, that extra weight and higher CG will make it a real handfull if you want to track the car, plus create tremendous heat in the engine and brakes. Lastly, it will never have the sexy, skinny waist shape of the vette. It will be a nice cruiser though, but at what price?

only a tiny bit. folks looking for top end HP and performance and willing to look at a wide variety of cars, mustang gt, boss 302, camaro ss, shelby gt500, cadillac cts-v, maybe something in the bmw 3 high end rage etc AND corvettes.
zl1 is targeted squarely a the gt500. thats its direct competitor. a guess is both when they come out are going to be expensive enough, with enough early adopter interest to make the cts-v a viable choice due to its price.
zl1 looks to be more sophisticated, but heavier. gt500 more hp but retains its solid rear axle and so far it looks like the suspension only has two settings, harsh and too-soft. the zl1 apparently has a better more adaptive suspension and independent rear end.
what i wish is that in of these corvette alternatives, they could get the weight down to around 3200 to 3300lbs. but that aint happening anytime soon.

It'll be the Mustang's competition. Heck it might draw away some potential Camaro owners when they find out they can buy a new Vette for around the same price as a new ZL1. Insurance will also be higher on the ZL1.

Here's my take:
Some of us were concerned that the CTS-V would take from the Vette sales, and I'm sure it did to some extent.
Now the ZL1 comes along and here we go again. Sure, if a guy is on the fence about wanting a performance car but can't talk the wife into a two seater, now he has another option in addition to the CTS-V Coupe or Sedan. (or Wagon?)
Now...I think that inside GM somewhere they're saying..Don't worry about all this nonsense with the ZL1 and the CTS-V...just wait until you see what we have in store for you Corvette faithful when we roll out the C7!

Do you want a pony car or do you want a world-class sports car?
It may steal a few sales but as already stated, its main competition will be the GT500. And calling it a 4-seater is a joke unless you are an 8-10 year-old.

I'd rather have the CTS-V Sedan or wagon. The new Camaro is both ugly, and a pig for what you're getting.
And it's definitely no competition for my 13 year old FRC...

From a strictly 0-60 time the ZL1 will beat the CORVETTE C6 NON Z06 with it's 580HP 3.9 to 60 time. However, this tells me that the c7 will need to have more then 580 hp or less weight or a combination of more ponies/less weight in order to regain the top seed here.Granted, one is a sports car and one a muscle car,but still if the next Vette can't beat a 580 hp Camaro or a 650 hp(600 hp??i forgot) Mustang ,I won't be looking at one!

Seeing how they priced such a powerful, technology & feature-ridden car has made me very excited for what might be in store for the C7. If GM will now sell you a ZL1 for the same price as a base Corvette (and the ZL1 can pretty well whoop a base vette), then it's fair to figure that we'll see more bang for your buck out of the next generation of Corvette as well.

Here's how it plays out.....the ZL1 will have better technology than the Shelby. The Shelby will inch out the ZL1 in the 1/4. The ZL1 will smoke the Shelby in a road course mainly due to the handling of the Camaro is vastly superior to the Shelby. The ZL1 has already beat the C6 Z06 around the Nurburing. This means the C7 will be amazing! It has to beat the Camaro. One thing that I will say having owned a 2SS and 3 vettes including my C6 Z, the Camaro felt like it was built incredibly well, although the performance is currently lacking. In fact it even feels more solid than my Z, but felt like it had no guts at all. Now with 150 more hp, the ZL1 will simply be the best car from GM for the money until the C7 comes out, ultimately trumping the Camaro with performance and quality. That is going to come at a cost though. It will easily be 15k more than the ZL1 for a base C7, in order to keep both cars in their lineup....otherwise they would basically be competing in sales against each other. I mean let's face it....if GM does the C7 right, it will be built of high quality materials with performance that will hold its own against much pricier super cars. This means they can bump the price up higher and still be cheaper than all of its competitors. If it works out, and quality/experience is improved, who would want to spend the extra cash for the Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc. They would be in the lead for at least the next 3-5 years. Adding a little more luxury and technology to the vette will ultimately win more buyers that are purchasing other makes.
