I'm guessing it's the smaller more specific stuff that I miss.
Most non-car people I meet have to be informed what my Z06 "is" as opposed to a stock Corvette. To onlookers it's a Corvette. Corvette enthusiastes of course recognize Corvette models on sight, only question which options?
You're just not familiar with what comprises the option packages denoted by 1/2/3/4 LT/Z numbers, yet. Others have posted what's included with each; however, prospective buyers need to know what it is they'd like ordering for their new car; while, with pre-owned cars there's no choice, it is what it is.
I know the forum is filled with Corvette enthusiasts, and the amount of information on corvettes that is readily available on this site is enormous.
With that said, I dare open up this can, I often times see members post on threads claiming they can tell if a car is a 2LT or a 3LT, and so on just from looking at a picture. How can you tell what package a car has just from looking at it?
I know some of the obvious differences, for example the 2005 had the shark fin antenna and the ugly steering wheel and shifter. I'm guessing it's the smaller more specific stuff that I miss.
All 2005's do not have the shark fin or wart. I think that was part of the On Star option. I think the 05 steering wheel looks better than some of the new one's. Some look cheap to me.

No, the shark fin or wart was not part of the OnStar. The only visible part of OnStar is the box at the top of the passenger side windshield.
As I posted previously, the shark fin was the antenna for the XM radio, AND THAT'S ALL.

If you are looking at a picture of just the outside I do not see how you would know what the interior or option package would be. I agree the wart would only be on a 2005 with XM and I believe that the chicklet came out in 2006. Other than that I do not remember any difference on the outside.
You can tell if its an 05 by the trail of gear lube, from the blown rear end, leading to it on the side of the road. If not that then its DBS, column lock or a thrown balancer.

Maybe some are including pictures of the interior when they say that. For instance, a picture of the lower part of the dash could show no switches for heated seats, meaning it does not have the 3LT package.
You mention the 2005 had the "...ugly steering wheel and shifter." I beg to differ. I rather like my 2005 'Doughboy' steering wheel and my manual 6-speed shifter is a thing of beauty.
